Paramount+ has renewed two of its most well-known animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants and The Patrick Star Show, giving each of them two additional seasons. The news comes from a Deadline report and follows a recent wave of programming changes across Paramount’s television brands.

According to the report, SpongeBob SquarePants has been renewed for Seasons 18 and 19, while The Patrick Star Show will continue with Seasons 6 and 7. Both renewals include 26 half-hour episodes each. The new seasons are already in production, with the next installments expected to arrive over the next couple of years. Season 18 of SpongeBob SquarePants and Season 6 of The Patrick Star Show are currently planned for a late 2026 release window, while the following seasons are expected in 2027.

The decision to extend both shows reflects Paramount’s broader strategy of focusing on long-running, reliable franchises. The company has recently shifted its cable and streaming priorities, especially after corporate changes tied to the Paramount-Skydance merger. As part of this restructuring, the company has leaned more heavily on established brands while scaling back or ending other series.

George Cheeks, Chair of the TV Media division, addressed the strategy in a statement reported by Deadline. He said, “Our cable brands will focus on a more curated slate, optimizing programming and marketing resources to amplify what resonates most. That means leaning into franchises like SpongeBob, PAW Patrol, RuPaul’s Drag Race, South Park, Ms. Pat, and The Daily Show, while continuing to develop new IP across our studios and seeking new ways to amplify and connect with audiences.”

While SpongeBob SquarePants remains one of the longest-running animated series in television history, it continues to perform strongly across multiple platforms. The show still draws steady viewership thanks to its mix of humor, surreal storytelling, and broad appeal that reaches both younger audiences and adults who grew up with the franchise. Over the years, it has remained a consistent performer for Nickelodeon and Paramount+, helping it maintain its position as a core brand.

Critics and audiences have had mixed but generally stable reactions to the newer seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants. While some longtime viewers feel the original run of episodes set a higher creative standard, the show is still praised for maintaining its core identity and introducing new storylines that keep the world of Bikini Bottom active and recognizable. The series continues to be described as one of the most influential animated shows of its era, even as it evolves with new creative teams.

The Patrick Star Show, which focuses on SpongeBob’s best friend Patrick in a spin-off format, has also developed its own audience since its debut. The series takes a more chaotic and sketch-like approach compared to the main show. Critics note that while it does not always match the consistency of SpongeBob SquarePants, it benefits from its experimental style and strong comedic tone. Fans of the franchise often see it as a lighter, more absurd extension of the original world.

Despite the cancellation of other Nickelodeon-linked projects in recent months, including Dora and Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Paramount’s decision shows continued confidence in its biggest animated properties. The renewals suggest that both SpongeBob SquarePants and The Patrick Star Show will remain central parts of the network’s long-term strategy.

With new seasons already in development, both series are expected to continue their presence on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon through at least 2027, keeping Bikini Bottom firmly on screen for years to come.
