There are few topics in franchise filmmaking more emotionally charged than the question of Paul Walker’s return to the ‘Fast and Furious’ universe. His legacy runs through every frame of the series, and as the saga inches toward its grand finale with ‘Fast Forever,’ that question has never felt more loaded or more alive.

TMZ caught up with Tyrese Gibson and Cody Walker at an In-N-Out near Universal Studios on Thursday, ahead of this year’s FuelFest, which the two are cohosting at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa. It was the kind of casual, unguarded moment paparazzi cameras love. It did not stay casual for long.

When TMZ started to ask Cody about the potential return of his brother’s character, Brian O’Conner, to the ‘Fast’ franchise, Tyrese immediately swooped in. The actor said, “Alright, alright, alright. We can’t talk about that. We can’t talk about that, man.” Tyrese practically shoved Cody into the truck to avoid the question and playfully pretended to be his security before the two took off. The clip racked up over 738,000 views within hours of being posted, and the internet has had thoughts ever since.

The reason the question carries so much weight goes back to a bombshell moment at last year’s FuelFest. Vin Diesel joined Tyrese Gibson and Cody Walker at FuelFest in Pomona, California, where he told the crowd that he had agreed to Universal’s request for the finale under three conditions. “The first is to bring the franchise back to L.A. The second thing was to return to the car culture, to the street racing. The third thing was reuniting Dom and Brian O’Conner,” Diesel said.

The return of Brian O’Conner, along with the return to street racing in Los Angeles, means the franchise is headed back to its roots, although it remains unclear exactly how Brian will be brought back for the final film. That uncertainty is precisely what makes every offhand comment, every evasive dodge, and every slammed truck door feel significant to the fanbase.

Walker died in a car crash in 2013 during a break from production on ‘Furious 7.’ The way the franchise handled that loss became one of Hollywood’s most discussed moments in recent memory. The seventh film was able to give his character a proper sendoff, using CGI, VFX artists, and his two brothers Cody and Caleb Walker to create 350 shots. VFX supervisor Joe Letteri explained to The Hollywood Reporter how the sound editors had to craft the vocal performance out of existing dialogue from Paul, and the team animated to that.

That sendoff, with Brian driving off into the sunset while Dom watches from his own road, remains one of the most emotionally resonant endings in blockbuster history. The idea of revisiting it, of bringing Brian back one more time, is something Diesel has made clear means everything to him personally. In a 2024 Instagram post, the actor reflected on his brotherhood with Walker and teased, “To think I just saw concept art for the next chapter. Brian… yeah, I will have to brace myself for this next film.”

The final film in the saga will bring everyone back into the fray, including Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs, Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw, Jason Momoa as Dante Reyes, Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto, and Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz, alongside the rest of Dominic Toretto’s crew. The cast alone signals that Universal intends for this to be a genuine send-off for a franchise that has spanned over two decades.

The evasiveness from Tyrese and Cody is telling in its own way. When the people closest to the project and closest to Paul Walker’s memory refuse to answer a direct question about Brian O’Conner’s return, it suggests there is something real and significant being protected. The secrecy surrounding the character’s role in ‘Fast Forever’ feels less like a deflection and more like a promise.
