‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Is Adding a Brand-New Villain Who Never Appeared in the Games
Season 3 of The Last of Us is starting to take shape, and a new report suggests the series is adding a major character who does not appear in the original video games. According to entertainment coverage from Deadline, the upcoming season will also introduce a new potential villain, played by actor Peter Sarsgaard.
The HBO series, based on the popular Naughty Dog video game franchise, has already made several changes from the source material in earlier seasons. Now, Season 3 appears to be continuing that trend with original additions to the story.
Peter Sarsgaard, known for roles in The Batman and other films, will reportedly play a new character named Amon. Deadline reports that Amon is one of the leaders of the Seraphites, a group that plays a major role in the world of The Last of Us.
The Seraphites, also known as “Scars,” are a religious faction in the series’ universe. They follow the teachings of a long-dead prophet, reject modern technology, and often use extreme violence against their enemies. Their presence has already been hinted at in earlier parts of the show, but Season 3 is expected to expand their storyline significantly.
While Amon is not a character from the video games, his role appears to place him directly inside one of the most dangerous groups in the story. This suggests the show is building out new leadership dynamics within the Seraphites that were not previously explored in the original material.
Season 3 is also expected to focus heavily on Abby’s storyline, which naturally brings the Seraphites further into the center of the narrative. This shift in perspective is one of the key reasons the group is likely to become more important in the upcoming season.
Peter Sarsgaard’s casting also adds attention to the series due to his history of playing complex and often villainous characters. He previously appeared as the corrupt District Attorney in The Batman, and has also played antagonistic roles in films such as Green Lantern and The Magnificent Seven. His experience with darker characters has led many viewers to expect a strong performance in The Last of Us.
According to the same report from Deadline, the production of Season 3 is currently underway in Vancouver. However, filming has been temporarily paused due to a month-long break linked to scheduling around major sporting events in Canada. Production is expected to resume in July and continue through the end of the year.
If the current schedule holds, Season 3 is likely aiming for a release window in 2027, although HBO has not officially confirmed a premiere date.

Craig Mazin continues as the primary showrunner for the series, while Neil Druckmann, who co-led the first two seasons and co-created the original games, is not involved in the same capacity for this season. That shift in creative leadership may also influence how closely the show follows the game’s storyline going forward.
With new characters, expanded factions, and a growing divergence from the source material, Season 3 of The Last of Us looks set to explore new territory while still building on the established world of the franchise.
