A viral sci-fi short film that captured millions of viewers online is now heading to the big screen. According to reports, Kevin Cate’s “Open Door” is being developed into a feature-length movie after securing a six-figure development deal.

The project comes at a time when Hollywood is paying closer attention to online creators and independent filmmakers who have built large audiences through platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. “Open Door” became a major success online, collecting nearly 15 million views across social media and introducing viewers to its mysterious and unsettling story.

The original short film lasts only a few minutes, but it left a strong impression on audiences. The story follows two people trapped in what appears to be a terrifying elevator ride. While the short keeps many of its secrets hidden, that mystery became one of the main reasons viewers kept talking about it long after watching.

Now, Cate is expanding that idea into a full-length movie. According to the announcement, he wrote the screenplay alongside Charles Spano, who is known for writing the science-fiction film “IO.” The upcoming movie will continue the story of Malcolm Powers and take audiences deeper into the strange world introduced in the short film.

Sean Anthony Baker and Mia Matthews, who starred in the original production, are expected to return for the feature adaptation. Their involvement has been welcomed by fans who became attached to the characters through the viral short.

Cate spoke about the strong reaction the project has received from viewers since its release. He said, “I literally can’t go a day without someone asking me what our characters saw down there.” He added, “And I really, really can’t wait to show everyone — and give some hints along the way.”

The filmmaker also made it clear that the original team remains an important part of the project. According to Cate, “We are ride or die with our original cast and crew who made this all happen.”

The feature film is being developed with executive producer Rick Kearney and Cate’s production company, Clinging Vine Films. The same company also produced Cate’s upcoming movie “Unbearable Christmas,” which features actors Julia Stiles, David Cross, and Stephen Root.

To coincide with the announcement, Cate has launched a dedicated website for fans of “Open Door.” The site will reportedly provide updates on the movie’s progress while also sharing clues, theories, and behind-the-scenes material connected to the story. The goal is to keep audiences engaged as development continues.

According to Cate, the production team is currently finalizing the budget while continuing fundraising efforts and exploring additional casting opportunities. He also hinted that several major roles have been written for the film.

Discussing the next stage of development, Cate said, “And we’ve written some of the most incredible roles to make this a next-level project.” He concluded by saying, “Right now, it’s just a matter of showing the demand and finding our village.”

The move from a viral short to a feature film highlights a growing trend in the entertainment industry. Following the success of recent projects from online creators, studios are increasingly looking to social media and YouTube for fresh talent and original ideas. “Open Door” is the latest example of a small online project making the leap to a much larger stage.
