‘Crawl 2’ Reportedly Trades Florida Swamps for New Location in Highly Anticipated Sequel

Horror sequels have a long history of dragging their monsters out of their comfort zones and into the chaos of a major city, and it seems the toothy stars of ‘Crawl’ are about to get the same treatment.

The original film carved out a surprising niche in the genre by trapping its characters in a flooding house with a pack of furious alligators, and that simple premise turned into a box office sleeper hit almost nobody saw coming.

Made on a modest budget, the film became something of a cult favorite among horror fans and even reportedly caught the attention of Quentin Tarantino as one of his favorite releases of its year.

With Alexandre Aja back in the director’s chair and Sam Raimi continuing to produce, anticipation for a sequel has been simmering for a while now, especially once word got out that the action was moving away from Florida entirely.

According to a new report, ‘Crawl 2’ will reportedly be set during Hurricane Sandy in New York City, putting the franchise’s alligator mayhem directly into the heart of Manhattan. The idea of alligators roaming a flooded, hurricane ravaged city plays directly into one of New York’s most persistent urban legends, the long whispered idea that alligators live in the sewers beneath the streets.

That legend has been floating around the city for decades, fueled by occasional real life sightings of gators turning up in unexpected places. Crawl 2’s New York setting taps directly into that sewer alligator mythology, giving the franchise a chance to lean into a fresh, high concept horror premise rather than simply repeating the original’s hurricane survival story.

The shift in setting represents a major departure for the franchise. The sequel is expected to follow an entirely new group of characters while moving the action to New York City, likely as a nod to that same urban legend about alligators living in the city’s sewer system. For a franchise that built its identity around a single house, a single family, and a single storm, jumping to one of the most densely populated cities on the planet is a significant swing.

Of course, New York has seen plenty of monsters and masked killers stalking its streets before. The city has long been a popular destination for horror sequels, with everything from Jason Voorhees in ‘Friday the 13th Part VIII Jason Takes Manhattan’ to Ghostface in ‘Scream VI’ getting their turn terrorizing the Big Apple. Alligators crawling through flooded subway tunnels and submerged apartment buildings would fit right into that tradition while still feeling distinct.

Setting the film during Hurricane Sandy specifically adds another layer of grounded horror to the premise. The 2012 storm left a lasting mark on the city, flooding subway lines, knocking out power across huge swaths of the boroughs, and causing billions of dollars in damage. Dropping a pack of alligators into that kind of real-world disaster gives the sequel a believable, almost documentary-style backdrop for its creature feature chaos.

Development on the project has had its ups and downs behind the scenes. Producer Sam Raimi has confirmed the project stalled for a while after Paramount changed ownership, but said the new team at the studio has expressed continued interest in moving forward with the sequel. Raimi has also been candid about embracing the inherently pulpy nature of the concept, framing it as a fun, unpretentious B movie rather than something to be embarrassed about.

With Aja returning to direct and Raimi still steering the ship creatively, there is reason for fans of the original to be optimistic that ‘Crawl 2’ can capture the same scrappy energy that made the first film work, just on a much bigger and wetter stage. Whether the finished film leans into full-blown sewer alligator horror or keeps things grounded in the storm itself remains to be seen, but the New York setting alone has already given fans plenty to chew on.
