Sam Reid Reveals the “Sausalito” Lestat & Louis Fight Almost Didn’t Make the Cut
The AMC series The Vampire Lestat continues to lean into the messy relationship between Louis and Lestat, and Episode 2 titled “Toledo” gives fans exactly that.
The episode is part of the larger AMC adaptation of Anne Rice’s vampire world, which began with Interview with the Vampire. In this new season, the focus shifts back to Lestat, but Louis remains deeply involved in his emotional life and conflicts.
In Episode 2, the two characters end up in a very unusual situation. They are placed in a plain conference room with lawyers, trying to deal with legal matters. But the conversation quickly turns away from business and becomes a personal argument filled with jealousy, history, and unresolved feelings.
Lestat openly brings up Louis’s past relationships, especially Armand, played by Assad Zaman. The tone is sarcastic and emotional, with both characters clearly still affected by their shared history.
At one point, Lestat reacts strongly when Armand is mentioned. He says, “Santiago, I could understand. At least he had a presence. But Armand?”
Louis responds by offering to talk about Armand more seriously, but the tension keeps building between them instead of calming down.
The dialogue becomes even more dramatic when they start discussing Louis’s past life with Armand. Louis mentions a second home in Sausalito, and Lestat responds with mocking disbelief. The conversation becomes playful, bitter, and emotional all at once, showing how complicated their relationship still is.
According to Sam Reid, who plays Lestat, this scene was not originally meant to be a major part of the episode. He explained in an interview with Decider that much of the dialogue was added late in production and was not intended to be fully shown on screen.
He said, “Yeah, I mean, the crazy thing about that scene is that it was interstitial dialogue that came to us very late.”
Reid also explained that the scene was originally meant to be covered with voiceover instead of fully acted dialogue. He said, “It was always going to have a voiceover over the top of it, so it was never supposed to be seen.”
Because of that, he said the actors approached it in a relaxed and playful way, not expecting it to become a major emotional moment in the episode. He described it as a moment where they were just having fun with the characters.

However, the final version of the scene ended up staying in the show. Reid said that showrunner Rolin Jones liked it so much that it was kept in the final cut. He added, “Rolin sort of fell in love with that and then decided it was the best thing he’d ever written and it was staying in the show.”
Jacob Anderson, who plays Louis, also reacted positively to the scene and enjoyed how it turned out.
The result is a moment that feels both comedic and emotional, showing the ongoing tension between Louis and Lestat as they continue to navigate their complicated past. According to Decider’s reporting and cast interviews, Episode 2 captures the unstable but still deeply connected relationship between the two characters in a very direct way.
The Vampire Lestat continues to stream on AMC+ as part of the expanding Anne Rice universe.
