Inside the Blood Bond: Sam Reid and Jennifer Ehle on ‘The Vampire Lestat’s’ Most Complex Relationship
The AMC series The Vampire Lestat continues to explore darker parts of Anne Rice’s vampire world, including a disturbing relationship between Lestat de Lioncourt and his mother Gabriella.
The series is part of AMC’s ongoing adaptation of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, which began with Interview with the Vampire. While earlier seasons focused more on Lestat and Louis, this new chapter shifts attention to Lestat’s past and his family history, including painful memories from his childhood.
Episode 2 of The Vampire Lestat uses flashbacks to show Lestat’s early life in France. It introduces his mother Gabriella in a very different way than before. The story shows her as emotionally distant and harsh even before she becomes a vampire. These scenes show how Lestat grew up feeling rejected and desperate for her approval.
Actor Sam Reid, who plays Lestat, explained that the character struggles to understand and explain this relationship. He said, “I think the joy of the book and those explanations he gives is that you are looking at a first-person narrator who has lots of flaws and complexities.”
The show also directly confronts the idea that their relationship becomes “different” after they become vampires. Reid said Lestat does not fully believe this idea. He explained, “It’s sometimes a bit like, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to talk about it now.’ And actually, progressively as the season goes on, it keeps coming back to him and he’s forced to readdress it.”
Actress Jennifer Ehle, who plays Gabriella, also spoke about her character. She described Gabriella as emotionally damaged even before becoming a vampire. She said her human life was shaped by loneliness and cruelty, which affected how she treated Lestat.
Ehle explained Gabriella’s mindset by saying, “She’s so stunted and twisted, it’s almost like she takes a kind of joy in it.” She also added that Gabriella crosses emotional boundaries even before her transformation into a vampire, and that her behavior becomes even more extreme afterward.

The series presents Gabriella as a character who feels both attachment and control over Lestat, but not in a healthy way. According to Ehle, there is still some form of care between them, but it is complicated and not clearly maternal. She said, “I don’t think that she thinks of herself as a mother when she’s a vampire.”
The showrunner Rolin Jones also explained that Lestat struggles to process these memories. He said that the character cannot fully explain or understand his own feelings, and often avoids thinking about them too deeply.
The story also introduces Louis de Pointe du Lac, played by Jacob Anderson, who becomes part of Lestat’s emotional conflict. Gabriella’s reaction to Louis shows that she feels threatened by anyone who has a strong emotional connection to Lestat.
This storyline will continue to develop as the season progresses. The relationship between Lestat and Gabriella remains one of the most uncomfortable and complex parts of the series, and it continues to shape how Lestat sees himself and his past.
The Vampire Lestat continues streaming on AMC as part of the larger Anne Rice Immortal Universe.
