Can You Really Escape Spoilers When a New Marvel Film Drops?

Every time a new Marvel film lands, the internet seems to collectively decide that everyone has already seen it. Within hours of the first screenings, social media fills up with reaction posts, YouTube thumbnails hinting at plot twists and new takes on characters, and headlines revealing cameos that you tried to avoid hearing about.

If you’re planning to wait until the next weekend, or even just a few days, you might find yourself dodging spoilers like a superhero avoiding fire. The challenge is that spoilers come from multiple sources: Discord,  TikTok, Reddit, X, YouTube, gaming forums, and group chats. Sometimes people deliberately reveal plot details; more often, they’re just excited or assume everyone’s caught up.

Here’s how you can (possibly) avoid Marvel spoilers.

Block keywords, filter recommendations, and consider unfollowing

If you’re perennially online, like many of us, blocking keywords might be the best way of avoiding spoilers. On X, use the muted words feature (in settings). On YouTube, you might want to turn off recommendations to filter out Marvel snippets and spoilers (if you’ve been watching related videos). Similarly, on Reddit and Discord you might be best off unfollowing certain accounts if you suspect they’re likely to give things away. As much as you might enjoy a certain streamer, their content probably isn’t worth it if it’s going to ruin the ending of Spider-Man: Brand New Day or Avengers: Doomsday, for example.

If you’re not a fan of theatres and you wait until films appear on streaming services, this might all be trickier. But if you have managed to avoid spoilers and you’re traveling when a film drops on Netflix or another platform, consider using a VPN to access servers from back home (Netflix libraries vary widely – the USA’s is one of the more generous). You can find out what ExpressVPN offers on their site.

There are plenty of Marvel films and series coming: The Punisher special, Daredevil: Born Again season 2, Visionquest, and Armor Wars, to name a few. Brand New Day has received hype pretty consistently for five years; we first got word of its development almost as soon as No Way Home was released. There have been leaked plot details and multiple endings were reportedly filmed. This sort of thing is often discussed on subreddits like r/LeaksAndRumours (if you enjoy that sort of thing, head there – but since you’re reading this article, perhaps that’s one to avoid).

Tell friends and family you’re avoiding spoilers

Technology options help, but one of the big spoiler risks is the people around you. A well-meaning friend might reveal a character’s death and a big cameo in a single sentence. Other times a spoiler might come in a casual conversation at work when a co-worker doesn’t know how invested you are.

If you know you won’t be seeing the latest Marvel release immediately, it’s worth telling people in advance. “I haven’t seen it yet, so no spoilers please” is usually enough. Most (reasonable) people don’t want to ruin a film for someone else and will try to avoid discussing plot points around you.

Group chats can be dangerous. If your friends are dissecting post-credit scenes and every tiny detail, consider muting conversations until you’ve seen the movie yourself. The same applies to Discord servers, WhatsApp groups, subreddits and forums.
