Emperor Palpatine has survived what looked like certain death more than once in the Star Wars universe, and the actor who plays him believes there could still be room for another return.

During a panel appearance at Spacecon 2016, Ian McDiarmid spoke about the fate of the famous Star Wars villain and admitted that he isn’t entirely convinced the Emperor’s story is over.

Palpatine appeared to meet his end in 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker when Rey turned his own Force lightning against him. The scene seemed to bring a final conclusion to one of the franchise’s most powerful villains. However, McDiarmid suggested that fans should not be too certain.

“I had no idea that I wasn’t dead,” McDiarmid said while discussing the character’s unexpected return in The Rise of Skywalker. “So, it’s been a journey. But I think I’m dead now, but don’t quote me.” Later in the same panel, the actor appeared to change his mind.

“I don’t believe he’s dead.” The comments have sparked fresh discussion among Star Wars fans about whether Palpatine could appear again in future projects.

The possibility may not be as unlikely as it sounds. Throughout Star Wars history, Palpatine has repeatedly found ways to survive. Many fans remember his apparent death in 1983’s Return of the Jedi when Darth Vader threw him down a reactor shaft aboard the second Death Star. At the time, it looked like the end of the Emperor.

That was not the case. In Star Wars comics, particularly the Dark Empire storyline released in the early 1990s, Palpatine returned by transferring his essence into clone bodies. Even after being defeated again, the character continued finding ways back into the story before eventually meeting another downfall.

Years later, Lucasfilm brought the Emperor back to the big screen in The Rise of Skywalker. The film revealed that Palpatine had survived through dark side powers and cloning technology, explaining his return decades after Return of the Jedi.

The decision surprised many viewers. According to McDiarmid, it surprised him as well. He was not expecting the character to return after what appeared to be a definitive ending in the original trilogy.

One of the most talked-about moments from The Rise of Skywalker came when Poe Dameron delivered the now-famous line, “Somehow, Palpatine returned.” The quote quickly became one of the most discussed pieces of dialogue in modern Star Wars and remains widely referenced by fans today.

With several Star Wars projects currently in development at Lucasfilm, speculation continues about which familiar characters might return in the future. While there has been no official announcement involving Palpatine, McDiarmid’s comments have once again raised questions about whether the Sith Lord could find another way back.

Given the character’s long history of escaping death, many fans would not be shocked to see him return once more. After all, Palpatine has built a reputation for surviving situations that would have ended almost anyone else.

For now, the Emperor’s future remains uncertain. But if Ian McDiarmid is right, Star Wars fans may not have seen the last of one of the franchise’s most iconic villains.
