The Axes Will Swing Again: ‘Bloodaxe’ Officially Renewed for Season 2 at Prime Video
Prime Video is showing a lot of confidence in its upcoming Viking series Bloodaxe. Even though the show has not premiered yet, the streaming service has already renewed it for a second season.
Bloodaxe has officially been given a season 2 order more than six months before its debut. The historical drama is expected to arrive on Prime Video in early 2027, but work on the next chapter is already moving forward. Production on season 2 is scheduled to begin in Dublin, Ireland, in August 2026.
The series comes from Vikings creator Michael Hirst and his son Horatio Hirst. The story follows Erik Bloodaxe, played by Xavier Molyneux, a famous Viking warrior who is destined to become King of Norway. Jessica Madsen stars as his wife, Gunnhild, who will play a major role in his rise to power.
Following the renewal announcement, Michael Hirst shared his excitement about the future of the show and thanked Prime Video for supporting the project so early.
“As the writers and showrunners of Bloodaxe, Horatio and I are very excited to announce that Amazon have also already commissioned a second season of our new Norse saga for Prime Video, which begins shooting in Ireland within a few weeks.”
Hirst also praised Amazon MGM Studios for believing in the series and spoke about what viewers can expect when the show finally arrives.
“We are so proud of the way Bloodaxe has turned out, in terms of its incredible storylines, its powerful invocation of Viking beliefs, its dramatic recreation of the way that Christianity has started to overcome the pagan world, and – not least – the way we use magic realism in an effort to induct the audience into a Viking mind-set.”
He added that he is excited for audiences around the world to return to the world of Norse history through the new series.
The early renewal suggests that Prime Video sees Bloodaxe as a major long-term project. The series is expected to explore not only Erik’s journey to power but also the social, political, and religious changes taking place during that period. Like Vikings, the show will blend historical events with dramatic storytelling.
Amazon MGM Studios Head of Global Television Peter Friedlander also spoke about the renewal. He praised the creators and expressed confidence in the series.
“Michael and Horatio are skillful storytellers whose work has consistently demonstrated the global appeal of ambitious historical drama.”
He also described Bloodaxe as a large-scale production with strong characters and detailed historical storytelling.
The cast includes several actors portraying both historical figures and original characters. Alongside Molyneux and Madsen, the series stars Levi Miller, Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, and Rune Temte.
So far, Prime Video has not released a trailer or any promotional footage. Because of that, many details about the show’s visual style and tone remain unknown. However, fans of Vikings will likely be interested in seeing how the new series approaches Viking culture, power struggles, and historical events.
With a second season already secured before the first episode has aired, Bloodaxe appears to be one of Prime Video’s biggest upcoming historical dramas. More details about the series are expected to be revealed as its 2027 premiere gets closer.
