‘Death Stranding’ Movie Director Reveals His Vision for a “Big but Offbeat” A24 Adaptation
The upcoming live-action adaptation of Death Stranding will not simply try to copy the popular video game. Director Michael Sarnoski says he wants the movie to feel like its own experience while still respecting the strange and emotional world created by Hideo Kojima.
In an interview about his upcoming film The Death of Robin Hood, Sarnoski also shared new details about his work on A24’s Death Stranding adaptation. According to the filmmaker, the goal is to create something that feels large in scale but still keeps a personal and unusual style.
“I want it to feel big, but also offbeat and character driven,” Sarnoski said.
The Death Stranding movie was announced in 2022, with Kojima Productions teaming up with Hammerstone Studios to develop the project. A24 later joined as a co-producer, and Sarnoski was chosen to write and direct the film. Producers include Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen, who are also known for their work with A24.
While fans of the game may expect a direct adaptation of the original story, Sarnoski explained that the movie will introduce its own ideas and characters. He said the film will exist within the same universe as the game but will not simply retell the same events.
“This takes place in the world of the video game, but I have my own set of characters,” Sarnoski explained. “There are some like overlapping characters that fans will be excited to see, but it’s very much my own story within this universe.”

The comments suggest that the filmmaker wants to balance familiar elements with a fresh approach. Death Stranding is known for its unusual storytelling, emotional themes, and unique post-apocalyptic setting, and Sarnoski appears interested in capturing those qualities rather than only focusing on the game’s biggest moments.
The original game follows Sam Porter Bridges, a delivery worker traveling through a broken version of America after a mysterious event connects the world of the living with supernatural forces. The story explores loneliness, human connection, and rebuilding society after a major disaster.
Sarnoski’s previous films suggest why he may be a good fit for the project. His 2021 movie Pig, starring Nicolas Cage, focused on grief, relationships, and personal journeys rather than traditional action. He also directed A Quiet Place: Day One, which expanded the popular horror franchise with a more emotional story.
The director recently revealed that he has already completed a second draft of the Death Stranding screenplay. He hopes to begin filming in Iceland and Northern Ireland next year.
Although details about the cast and plot remain limited, Sarnoski’s comments indicate that the movie will aim for a different kind of video game adaptation. Instead of creating a simple action film, he wants to focus on characters and the strange atmosphere that made Death Stranding stand out.
The project is still in development, but Sarnoski’s approach has already caught the attention of fans. By combining A24’s creative style with the world of Kojima’s game, the Death Stranding movie could become one of the more unique video game adaptations in recent years.
