A new teaser for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey has been released, giving audiences another look at one of the most anticipated movies of 2026. The film is set to arrive in theaters on July 17, 2026, and will be shown in IMAX as well as other premium formats.

The Odyssey is written and directed by Christopher Nolan and is based on the famous ancient Greek epic poem by Homer. The story follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. His journey is filled with danger, mythical creatures, and difficult challenges. Along the way, he encounters figures from Greek mythology including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the nymph Calypso. At the heart of the story is Odysseus’ attempt to reunite with his wife Penelope after years away from home.

Matt Damon plays the lead role of Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway portrays Penelope. The film also features a large cast that includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. The project marks another major collaboration between Nolan and several actors who have previously appeared in his films.

Nolan began writing the screenplay in March 2024. By October of that year, Universal Pictures had secured the project, and the film was officially announced in December. Casting continued through late 2024 and early 2025, with Damon later confirmed as the film’s central character.

Nolan reportedly approached the story with the goal of creating a realistic version of Greek mythology. Sources connected to the production state that he drew inspiration from Emily Wilson’s 2017 translation of The Odyssey, which became widely praised for its modern approach to Homer’s work. Nolan was also influenced by the classic fantasy films of legendary visual effects artist Ray Harryhausen.

The production was one of the largest of Nolan’s career. Filming took place between February and August 2025 across several countries and locations, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, Malta, and the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles. The movie is estimated to have a budget of around $250 million, making it one of Nolan’s most expensive projects to date.

The film also stands out for its technical achievements. According to production information, The Odyssey is the first feature film to be shot entirely using IMAX 70mm film cameras. Nolan has long been known for pushing large-format filmmaking, and this project continues that trend on an even larger scale.

In the months leading up to its release, discussions surrounding the film have already emerged online. Some viewers and commentators have debated the movie’s costume designs, casting choices, accents, dialogue, and overall approach to historical accuracy. These conversations have become a major part of the film’s early publicity as anticipation continues to build.

With its massive cast, ambitious production, and one of the most famous stories ever written as its source material, The Odyssey is shaping up to be one of the biggest movie events of 2026.
