‘Obsession’ Makes Horror History as R-Rated Hit Crosses Important Threshold at the Box Office
The low-budget horror movie Obsession has reached a huge milestone at the box office, becoming one of the few horror films ever to pass the $200 million mark in the United States and Canada.
According to box office tracking reports, the film reached a domestic total of around $198.7 million before crossing the $200 million mark. Once it passed that number, Obsession became only the eighth horror movie in history to achieve the milestone and the first film from Focus Features to reach that level domestically.
The movie’s success has been especially surprising because of how little it cost to make. Obsession was produced for less than $1 million, while Focus Features reportedly spent around $15 million to acquire worldwide distribution rights. The film has now turned that small investment into a massive financial win for everyone involved.
The movie continued its strong run even weeks after release. On one Wednesday, Obsession earned $3.2 million, marking one of the biggest fifth Wednesday performances ever recorded for a horror film. The result represented only a 23.8% drop compared with the previous week, showing that audiences were still showing up despite new competition.
The film was also able to expand its theatrical reach, adding more than 160 theaters and playing in over 3,000 locations across North America. Strong word of mouth has helped keep the movie alive, with younger viewers playing a major role in its success.
Early box office expectations for Obsession were much lower. Analysts originally predicted the movie would open with around $8 million to $10 million from more than 2,600 theaters. After the film earned $7 million on its first day, those estimates increased, but even the higher predictions did not come close to its final performance.
Obsession opened with $17.2 million, finishing behind bigger releases like Michael and The Devil Wears Prada 2. However, instead of slowing down, the movie gained momentum. During the Memorial Day weekend, it earned around $32 million, including $24 million during its second weekend. That was a rare achievement for a horror movie, especially one released outside the holiday season.
Box office analysts pointed to strong audience reactions as one of the biggest reasons behind the film’s unusual growth. Reports showed that viewers between the ages of 18 and 34 made up a large part of the audience, helping the movie spread through social media and fan recommendations.
The film later achieved another major record by becoming Focus Features’ highest-grossing domestic release, passing Downton Abbey’s previous record. It also became the studio’s biggest worldwide success.
Industry observers now believe Obsession could continue climbing. The movie is expected to pass It Chapter Two’s domestic total of $211.6 million, moving it higher on the list of the biggest horror films ever released in North America.
Some predictions now suggest the film could finish its theatrical run somewhere between $250 million and $270 million domestically if it maintains its current momentum.

The success of Obsession is another reminder that horror movies can become major box office hits without massive budgets. With strong audience reactions, smart marketing, and a long theatrical run, the film has turned into one of the biggest surprises of the year.
