Jim Carrey Could Be Returning as The Grinch in a Long-Awaited Sequel
Jim Carrey may be putting on the green makeup once again, as the Grinch could be returning for a new Christmas adventure.
Universal and Imagine Entertainment are reportedly developing a sequel to the 2000 hit movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with Carrey in talks to return as the famous holiday villain. According to reports, director Ron Howard is also expected to come back, once again working with producer Brian Grazer through Imagine Entertainment.
The project is still in early development, and no official title or release date has been announced. However, the return of Carrey and Howard would reunite two of the biggest names behind the original film, which became one of the most successful Christmas movies ever made.
The upcoming sequel is set to have a new group of writers working on the story. Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel have been attached to write the script. The trio are known for their comedy work on shows like Barry, Silicon Valley, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Veep. They also previously worked together on another Dr. Seuss adaptation, 2003’s The Cat in the Hat.
The original How the Grinch Stole Christmas arrived in theaters in 2000 and quickly became a holiday classic. Starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch and Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who, the film earned around $260 million in the United States and finished with more than $345 million worldwide.
The movie was also recognized during awards season, winning the Academy Award for Best Makeup. The transformation of Carrey into the Grinch was one of the biggest challenges of the production, requiring hours of makeup work every day.

Carrey has previously spoken about how difficult the process was. He revealed that he wanted to quit on the first day of filming because the makeup experience was extremely uncomfortable. He explained that he nearly returned his $20 million salary before eventually finding ways to handle the demanding process, including advice from a person who trained CIA agents to deal with extreme situations.
Despite those challenges, the movie remained a major success and has continued to find new fans years later. The film has become a regular holiday streaming favorite, frequently appearing among the most-watched Christmas movies during the holiday season.
According to streaming data, the movie was one of the most watched holiday titles in recent years. During the weeks surrounding Christmas, it reached the second spot on streaming movie charts with hundreds of millions of minutes viewed, showing that audiences still have a strong connection with Carrey’s version of the character.
The Grinch himself has a long history. The character was created by author Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, in the 1957 book How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The story follows the Grinch, a character who tries to ruin Christmas for the people of Whoville by stealing their decorations and gifts, only to discover the true meaning of the holiday.
The story was first adapted into a famous animated special in 1966 before becoming the live-action movie starring Carrey decades later.
If the sequel moves forward, it could bring back one of the most recognizable holiday characters in modern movie history. With Carrey potentially returning and the original creative team involved, fans are already wondering what kind of new Christmas chaos the Grinch could bring back to Whoville.
