A new “Police Academy” movie featuring Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key was once in development, but the project appears to have quietly disappeared. According to comedian and actor Ike Barinholtz, the reboot was eventually abandoned after real-world events made the idea of a police comedy feel impossible to move forward.

Barinholtz discussed the project during an appearance on the “Funny You Ask with Ike Barinholtz” podcast, where he revealed details about the long-running attempt to bring the franchise back. The new movie had been in development at New Line Cinema for years, with Peele and Key attached to star and produce.

The original plan was to create a modern and more adult version of “Police Academy.” Barinholtz explained that he and his writing partner David Stassen were hired to rewrite the script with a darker and more mature approach similar to the first movie in the franchise.

“Years ago, my partner and I got hired to rewrite Police Academy for New Line Cinema,” Barinholtz said. “They said to us, ‘We want you guys to write it and make it dirty, rated R, modern.’”

However, the project faced problems during development. Barinholtz explained that the original creator of the franchise was involved in meetings and often pushed back against changes, wanting the new film to stay close to the style of the original movies.

According to Barinholtz, the creator wanted the original cast members to return, even though some of them had already passed away. He recalled a moment when Stassen mentioned several classic characters during a pitch, only for him to realize some of the actors were no longer alive.

“He was not happy,” Barinholtz said while describing the reaction during those meetings.

The biggest issue came in 2014 after the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Brown was killed by police officer Darren Wilson, and the incident led to nationwide protests and discussions about police actions and race relations.

Barinholtz said the team eventually felt that the timing was no longer right for a comedy about police officers, especially one starring Peele and Key.

“More importantly, as we were developing the film, Mike Brown got shot and all of a sudden—and we were making the movie for Key and Peele, and people were like, ‘We’re not making a cop comedy right now where we’re having these two hilarious Black actors play police officers,’” Barinholtz explained.

The comments suggest that the project was shelved because of the changing cultural conversation around law enforcement. New Line Cinema has not officially confirmed that the reboot has been canceled, but there have been no major updates about the movie in recent years.

The attempt to revive “Police Academy” had been going on for more than two decades. The original franchise began in 1984 with Steve Guttenberg leading the cast as Carey Mahoney. The first film became a surprise hit and led to six sequels released between 1986 and 1994. The series also expanded into animated and live-action television shows.

There have been several attempts to bring the franchise back over the years, but none have reached production. In 2018, Guttenberg said another movie was still possible and suggested he could return as Mahoney.

For now, the future of “Police Academy” remains unclear. While the franchise continues to have fans, the version involving Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key appears unlikely to happen after years of development.
