Ice Cube and Nia Long Reunite for New ‘Are We There Yet?’ Sequel Fans Have Been Waiting For

Ice Cube and Nia Long are bringing back one of their most popular comedy stories with a new movie in the “Are We There Yet?” franchise. The upcoming third installment, titled “Are They Gone Yet?”, is currently in early development and will continue the story of Nick and Suzanne years after audiences first met them.

According to Deadline, the new film is being developed after Skydance Sports acquired the project. The movie will once again feature Ice Cube and Nia Long returning as Nick and Suzanne, the couple at the center of the family comedy series.

The original “Are We There Yet?” arrived in theaters in 2005 and introduced audiences to Nick, played by Ice Cube, a man trying to win over Suzanne, a divorced mother played by Long. Nick believes taking Suzanne’s children on a long road trip will help him get closer to her, but the journey quickly becomes much more difficult than expected.

The movie became a surprise box office success, opening at number one in the United States and eventually earning around $97 million worldwide. Its popularity led to a sequel, “Are We Done Yet?”, which was released in 2007. That movie focused on Nick and Suzanne’s life as newlyweds while they adjusted to becoming a blended family. This time, their biggest problem came from dealing with a difficult contractor while trying to build their dream home. The sequel earned about $58 million worldwide.

Now, almost two decades after the first film, the story is moving into a new stage. In “Are They Gone Yet?”, Nick will face a completely different challenge: becoming a grandfather. The script is being written by Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana, who are expected to bring the characters into a new chapter of their lives.

The return of Ice Cube and Nia Long also continues the long history of the franchise beyond movies. After the success of the first two films, the series was turned into a television sitcom on TBS. The show starred Terry Crews and Essence Atkins and ran for three seasons between 2010 and 2013.

The upcoming movie is being produced by Broken Road and CubeVision. Ice Cube, Todd Garner, and Jeff Kwatinetz are attached as producers, while Ben Hurwitz and Lauren Gennawey will serve as executive producers.

The franchise has remained a recognizable part of 2000s family comedy, with the original films remembered for their mix of humor, parenting challenges, and the unexpected chemistry between Ice Cube and Long. The movies also helped show a different side of Ice Cube, who was already known for his music career and more serious acting roles.

With the new sequel, the story appears ready to explore what happens when a couple who once struggled with young children finds themselves dealing with the next generation. Instead of road trips with kids, Nick’s new challenge will involve family life from a completely different perspective.

While details about the plot, filming schedule, and release date have not yet been announced, fans of the original movies can expect another chapter featuring the same characters that started the franchise nearly 20 years ago. Deadline was the first outlet to report news about the upcoming third film.
