Michael Caine’s Iconic Voice Returns Through AI for Epic ‘The Odyssey’ Audiobook
Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ has been told for thousands of years, but a new version of the classic story is bringing it to audiences in a very modern way. An upcoming audiobook uses artificial intelligence to recreate the voice of legendary actor Michael Caine, giving listeners a new way to experience the famous Greek epic before Christopher Nolan’s big-screen adaptation arrives.
The 13-hour audiobook was created by ElevenLabs, an AI audio company known for developing realistic digital voices. The project was released through the company’s ElevenReader app and was produced using several AI tools, including digital voices, generated music, and sound effects.
Instead of relying on a large traditional production team, the entire audiobook was created by a small group of four producers. According to ElevenLabs, the team completed the project in only six weeks, creating a full audio experience with multiple characters, music, and different language versions.
Michael Caine’s voice was chosen to guide listeners through the story because of his decades-long connection with audiences. The Oscar-winning actor has become known for his distinctive voice and has appeared in many films directed by Christopher Nolan, making him a fitting narrator ahead of Nolan’s upcoming ‘The Odyssey’ movie.
Dustin Blank, ElevenLabs’ head of partnerships, explained the company’s decision in an interview with Variety. “Michael Caine is a legend. He is a national treasure, and his voice means so much to so many people, and we thought that he, as the narrator, would be the perfect person to help tell this story.”
The company also said the use of Caine’s voice was made with his approval. ElevenLabs previously added Caine to its “Iconic Marketplace,” a service where licensed voices can be used for approved projects. The company said its partnerships are based on consent and compensation, with creators being paid when their voices are used.
Caine also shared his thoughts about the project, saying that combining ancient storytelling with new technology could introduce the classic tale to modern audiences. “The Odyssey is one of the greatest stories ever told. For nearly three millennia, its themes of perseverance, loyalty, temptation, and the enduring call of home have resonated across cultures and generations,” Caine said in a statement.
The audiobook arrives at a time when artificial intelligence is becoming a bigger part of entertainment. Companies are exploring how AI can help create projects that might have been too expensive or time-consuming with traditional methods.
ElevenLabs believes AI could allow smaller teams to produce more ambitious audio experiences. Madeline Shue from the company’s publisher partnerships team told Variety that the production process showed what is now possible with new technology. “It’s a very small team for what this is, which is a very immersive audiobook production,” she said.
This is not ElevenLabs’ first experiment involving famous voices. The company previously created an AI version of Judy Garland’s voice for ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ audiobook, showing its interest in combining classic performances with modern technology.
The project also arrives as excitement continues to grow around Nolan’s upcoming film adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’. While the audiobook is not a replacement for the movie, ElevenLabs hopes it will help audiences connect with Homer’s original story before seeing it brought to life on the big screen.
As AI continues changing how stories are created and experienced, Michael Caine’s digital narration of ‘The Odyssey’ shows how Hollywood’s past and future are beginning to meet in unexpected ways.
