A fresh look at Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey has given fans a new glimpse at one of the most ambitious movies of his career. New images released by Empire show Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Anne Hathaway in the highly anticipated adaptation of Homer’s legendary Greek story.

The film will bring one of the oldest and most famous tales in history to the big screen, following Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces dangerous challenges, mysterious creatures, and powerful forces while trying to reunite with his wife Penelope.

Empire’s new images offer another look at the movie’s impressive cast, with Damon taking on the role of Odysseus and Hathaway playing Penelope. Tom Holland is also part of the large ensemble cast, which includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

The Odyssey is written and directed by Nolan, who is known for films such as Oppenheimer, Inception, and The Dark Knight trilogy. The filmmaker is producing the project alongside his wife Emma Thomas through their production company Syncopy.

The movie has been described as a realistic take on Greek mythology rather than a traditional fantasy adventure. Nolan reportedly looked to Emily Wilson’s 2017 translation of Homer’s Odyssey for inspiration, as well as the work of legendary visual effects artist Ray Harryhausen, who helped define the look of classic fantasy cinema.

Production on The Odyssey has been massive. Filming took place across several locations, including Greece, Italy, Morocco, Iceland, Scotland, Malta, Western Sahara, and Los Angeles. The movie is also set to become Nolan’s first film shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras, continuing his commitment to large-scale filmmaking.

With a reported budget of around $250 million, The Odyssey ranks among Nolan’s most expensive projects ever. The film’s scale, locations, and practical filmmaking approach have already made it one of the biggest upcoming releases.

The story will explore many famous moments from Homer’s original epic, including Odysseus’ encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the dangerous sirens, and the mysterious nymph Calypso. At its center, however, is a simple story about a man trying to find his way back to the person and place he loves.

The cast has also created plenty of excitement among movie fans. Damon’s portrayal of Odysseus marks a new challenge for the actor, while Holland and the rest of the ensemble bring additional star power to Nolan’s historical adventure.

Universal Pictures will release The Odyssey in theaters on July 17. The film will arrive in IMAX and other premium formats, giving audiences the chance to experience Nolan’s latest project on the biggest possible screen.

With its legendary source material, huge cast, and one of Hollywood’s most respected directors behind it, The Odyssey is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about films of 2026.
