From ‘Supergirl’ to More DC Blockbusters — Ana Nogueira Is Tapped to Write Several Big DCU Movies, and Fans Are Worried
Ana Nogueira is becoming one of the key writers behind the future of the DC Universe. After working for years on the upcoming Supergirl movie, the screenwriter has now been trusted with several major DC projects, including the upcoming live-action Teen Titans movie and a new Wonder Woman film.
Nogueira recently spoke with Variety about her journey with DC and how her work on Supergirl led to more opportunities inside the franchise. She was originally hired to write a Supergirl script when the project was being developed as a possible spin-off from The Flash. However, things changed after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios and created a new direction for the DC Universe.
According to Nogueira, Gunn and Safran liked her vision for Supergirl so much that they decided to keep her involved and give her more projects.
“I’ve been screenwriting for a long time, and you can go through drafts and drafts and drafts, and it doesn’t happen, or it gets really close, you’re about to be greenlit and something falls apart, so for it all to happen so quickly was nuts and abnormal, for sure,” Nogueira told Variety.
Her next major assignments include writing the new Teen Titans movie and a Wonder Woman project. Both films are expected to play important roles in the future of the DC Universe as the studio continues building a new connected franchise.
However, the news has also created concern among DC fans. While Nogueira’s involvement has received support from Gunn and Safran, some fans remain worried because of the mixed response surrounding Supergirl.
Some viewers have criticized aspects of the movie, but everyone agrees that the script is atrocious. Now, the general consensus is that we should ask ourselves whether Nogueira is the right person to shape more major DC stories, especially important ones as Teen Titans and Wonder Woman.

Another major discussion among fans comes from how Nogueira adapted Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow comic for Supergirl. The comic is highly regarded by many readers, and some fans believe the movie changes important parts of Kara Zor-El’s journey and the story’s ending.
Nogueira completely misunderstood the ending of Woman of Tomorrow. Nogueira confirmed that Supergirl killing Krem was always planned as the ending for the movie, it was in the original pitch as well, and stated the following:
. “The ending between Kara and Krem was always in it, from the pitch — truly from the very beginning.” “Because the comic ends with Ruthye killing him, but in the far, far future. We knew we weren’t gonna be able to do that kind of time jump.”
This is, however, incorrect, as Krem ultimately lives in the original comic. In the comic’s ending, the story jumps far into the future, where an elderly Ruthye reunites with Supergirl and Krypto. Kara reveals that Krem has spent many years in the Phantom Zone and has come to regret his past crimes. She releases him, and Krem apologizes to Ruthye and asks for forgiveness. Instead of killing him, Ruthye simply hits him with her walking stick before walking away with Kara and Krypto, leaving Krem alive.
Tom King also confirmed that Krem lives during an episode of Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast from 2024.
Nogueira explained to Variety that she wanted to create a different version of the story while keeping the emotional core intact. She said adapting the comic required making changes because certain elements worked better on the page than on screen.
“There are all these little things that work in comics, but then suddenly in a script, they don’t work,” Nogueira said.
Despite the concerns, DC Studios appears confident in her abilities. Nogueira said she feels honored that Gunn and Safran trusted her with some of the company’s biggest characters. “It’s a huge compliment and a vote of confidence. It’s honestly quite overwhelming,” she said.
With Teen Titans and Wonder Woman still in early development, Nogueira has a major role in shaping what comes next for DC. Whether fans’ concerns fade or grow will likely depend on how audiences respond to her future projects.
