Milly Alcock’s reported paycheck for playing Supergirl has come to light as the DC film continues to struggle at the box office.

According to Variety, the House of the Dragon star was paid around $400,000 to play Kara Zor-El in her first major movie role. The report also says she would have received a small box office bonus if the film had performed well in theaters.

The reported salary has sparked discussion online, especially as Supergirl is expected to lose a significant amount of money during its theatrical run. Variety reports that Warner Bros. spent about $170 million to produce the movie, along with another $120 million on marketing. After opening with around $38 million in North America and $68 million worldwide, the film is now projected to finish with roughly $200 million to $210 million globally.

Despite those disappointing numbers, Variety notes that Alcock’s salary was much lower than what established Hollywood stars usually earn for leading blockbuster films. Sources close to the production told the outlet that Supergirl had no major backend deals for its cast or creative team. That means actors were not promised a percentage of the movie’s box office earnings before the studio recovered its costs.

Variety explained that this differs from major stars like Joaquin Phoenix or Lady Gaga, who have negotiated first-dollar gross deals on some projects. Those agreements allow actors to receive a share of ticket sales in addition to their upfront salary. Alcock, as a newcomer leading her first blockbuster, reportedly did not have that type of contract.

The actress became widely known after starring in HBO’s House of the Dragon, but Supergirl marked her biggest film role to date. She was chosen to lead the new DC movie following a brief introduction as Kara Zor-El in Superman, which launched the rebooted DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran.

While Supergirl has struggled financially, DC Studios says it remains committed to its long-term plans. Speaking to The New York Times, Peter Safran said, “While ‘Supergirl’ didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”

Box office analysts believe the movie’s performance highlights the challenges of launching films centered on lesser-known comic book characters. Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations told Variety, “This was always going to be a tough hurdle for DC and Warner Bros. because Supergirl isn’t a character that has ever created an event-level blockbuster.” He added, “This is just a case of the film wasn’t good enough to become an event.”

According to Variety, Supergirl could lose between $80 million and $120 million depending on its final worldwide box office total. Even so, industry experts believe the reported salary shows Warner Bros. kept costs lower by casting a rising actress rather than an established A-list star.

Although the movie’s financial results have been disappointing, Alcock’s reported $400,000 payday reflects her growing status in Hollywood. With several major projects already on the horizon, many expect the actress’s earning power to increase significantly in the coming years.
