The search for the next James Bond is moving forward, but one person with decades of experience casting 007 believes the role requires more than fame or popularity.

Debbie McWilliams, the casting director behind the last three James Bond eras, has shared what she believes producers should look for in the next actor to play the famous spy. Speaking to The Independent, McWilliams said the next Bond should not be an obvious choice and should keep an air of mystery.

McWilliams worked on Bond films from For Your Eyes Only through No Time to Die, spending around 40 years helping shape the franchise before retiring. According to her, the most important quality for the next 007 is that the actor remains unknown enough for audiences to believe in the character. She said Bond needs to be “a total enigma.”

“We want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that’s what spies are. We don’t need to know where he goes shopping or who his parents are, or where he lives. We never want to see him at home,” McWilliams told The Independent.

For McWilliams, the character’s job is just as important as his personality. She believes audiences need to fully accept Bond as someone capable of carrying out dangerous missions.

“And a vital element of the whole thing is his job description. He’s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don’t, then you’ve lost the audience,” she explained.

The comments come as the search for Daniel Craig’s replacement continues. Deadline previously reported that producers and director Denis Villeneuve have started contacting actors who will move on to the next stage of auditions later this summer.

No official list of finalists has been announced, but several names have been linked to the role by fans and media reports, including Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson, and Jacob Elordi. However, McWilliams suggested that the eventual choice could be someone less expected.

She believes Bond casting has often worked best when producers look beyond the biggest names. The same approach helped discover Daniel Craig, whose casting was based on more than just his previous film work.

According to Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye, current Bond casting director Nina Gold appears to share a similar approach. Reports suggest the search has focused heavily on actors with strong theater backgrounds rather than only established movie stars.

Bamigboye noted that Barbara Broccoli, who previously oversaw the franchise, was impressed by Craig’s performances in projects like Layer Cake and his work on stage, including productions at London theaters.

Several theater actors have reportedly attracted attention during the current search. Among the names mentioned are David Shields, who earned praise for his performance in James Graham’s play Punch, and Luke Thompson, known for Bridgerton but also recognized for his stage work.

Thompson has appeared in major theater productions, including Ivo van Hove’s adaptation of A Little Life, and is expected to appear in the stage version of The Lives of Others alongside Keira Knightley and Stephen Dillane.

The final decision will reportedly involve Bond producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, along with Denis Villeneuve and executives at Amazon MGM.

While fans continue to debate who should become the next 007, McWilliams believes the answer is not about choosing the most famous actor. For her, the next Bond needs to bring mystery, confidence, and the ability to make audiences believe he truly is a spy.
