Fans of ‘House of the Dragon‘ have spent an entire season wondering what really happened to Otto Hightower after his shocking disappearance, and now that the answer has finally arrived, it raises just as many questions about his daughter Alicent. Did the Dowager Queen know her father was being held prisoner the whole time, or was she just as in the dark as everyone else watching at home.

The truth turns out to be far more tragic than fans expected, and it adds a gut punching layer to an already devastating storyline involving the Hightower family.

Otto Hightower’s Disappearance Explained

Otto’s vanishing act actually began all the way back in season two, when King Aegon stripped his grandfather of his role as Hand of the King and replaced him with Ser Criston Cole. During the episode “Rhaenyra the Cruel,” a disgraced and frustrated Otto told Alicent he could not stay in King’s Landing and would instead return to Oldtown, where his family rules.

From that point forward, nobody in House Hightower heard a single word from him again. Otto never told Alicent whether he ultimately settled on Oldtown or Highgarden, and she never learned which destination he chose. That uncertainty hung over the rest of the season like a storm cloud nobody could quite explain.

By the sixth episode of season two, a visibly worried Alicent confided in both Grand Maester Orwyle and her brother Gwayne that her many ravens to Oldtown, Highgarden, and every great house in the Reach had gone completely unanswered. Her father had effectively vanished without a trace, and nobody at court had any idea where he had gone or why he had stopped sending word.

Alicent’s Search For Her Missing Father

Alicent’s anxiety only grew as the season wore on, and even those closest to her tried to offer some comfort during the agonizing wait. Gwayne reassured his sister that “Otto Hightower is ever-resourceful” and would “send news when there is news to send,” while Orwyle also seemed visibly concerned about the silence.

That reassurance turned out to be hollow. It was only in the season finale that fans learned it had been physically impossible for Otto to send or receive any messages at all, because he was being held prisoner in a dark, unknown dungeon rather than traveling to safety.

This means Alicent spent the entirety of season two genuinely believing her father was simply out of contact, not realizing he had likely never left King’s Landing in the first place. The former Hand never made it to Oldtown, and had he arrived home even for a single day, someone surely would have told Alicent. Her search for him was sincere, not performative, which makes what eventually happens even harder to watch.

Otto’s Fate Revealed In Season 3

The mystery finally came to a brutal head in ‘House of the Dragon’ season three, episode two, when Otto resurfaced after Rhaenyra successfully took King’s Landing. Otto Hightower’s return revealed that he had secretly been held in the dungeons of the Red Keep ever since being fired as Aegon’s Hand back in season two, and that Larys Strong had been keeping him there as a “gift” for Rhaenyra and Daemon should they ever take the capital.

Everyone in the throne room was visibly shocked when Otto was hauled up from the dungeons, with Rhaenyra completely thrown by the sight of her father’s former counselor while Daemon could barely contain his glee. That collective shock is telling, because it suggests even Otto’s own family had no idea he was being held just beneath the castle the entire time.

Rhaenyra ultimately beheaded Otto in a gruesome, botched execution, and it’s only after the deed is done that Alicent arrives in the throne room. She sees her father’s head on the floor with no room for doubt about who was responsible, and she appears to be unaware of Larys’ actual role in his capture, meaning it looks to her as though Rhaenyra herself had been the one holding him all along.

Alicent And Rhaenyra’s Relationship Going Forward

The timing of Alicent’s arrival strongly suggests she did not know Otto was alive in that dungeon, and was instead confronted with his death as a horrifying surprise rather than the resolution of a known captivity. Because Alicent had no idea who actually captured her father, she will now effectively become a prisoner of Rhaenyra’s, since the queen cannot simply let her and Helaena walk free after beheading Otto while Aegon and Aemond remain alive somewhere in the realm.

That dynamic is set to dominate much of what remains of the season, especially since the show built its early identity around the bond between these two women. The series was originally built around Alicent and Rhaenyra’s friendship and its painful fallout, something that was mostly sidelined in season two simply because the characters spent so much time apart.

According to Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, Alicent’s judgment of her actions still carries enormous emotional weight regardless of how fractured their relationship has become. In an interview with ELLE, D’Arcy explained that no matter how polarized the two women’s relationship becomes, it is still Alicent’s approval that Rhaenyra craves more than anyone else’s, a dynamic established in their final exchange together.

Given how much grief and confusion Otto’s disappearance caused Alicent across an entire season, it makes the brutality of his on screen death land even harder for longtime viewers. Knowing she spent months desperately trying to track him down only to discover he had been a prisoner all along adds a layer of dramatic irony that ‘House of the Dragon’ clearly built with intention.

With Alicent now trapped in King’s Landing under Rhaenyra’s rule and forced to process her father’s execution without ever having known the truth of his captivity, how do you think this devastating revelation will reshape her fragile alliance with the woman who once was her closest friend.
