Sylvester Stallone has never been shy about sharing his thoughts on action movies, and years ago he made it clear that he did not see Orlando Bloom as a true action hero.

The comment came when Stallone was promoting his return as John Rambo in the 2008 film Rambo. After spending years away from major action roles, the actor wanted to remind audiences what he believed a classic action star looked like. At the time, Stallone looked at the new generation of Hollywood stars and felt there was a difference between them and the action icons of his era.

“I’m still in my prime, and I look forward to showing fans the real action hero again,” Stallone said. He then questioned the idea of Bloom being considered part of the action genre’s biggest names, adding, “Today’s idea of an action hero is Orlando Bloom. Orlando Bloom? Give me a break.”

Stallone’s words were certainly direct, but many fans pointed out that Bloom was never really marketed as a traditional action hero in the same way as Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Bruce Willis. While Bloom appeared in several huge action and fantasy films, his roles were usually focused on different types of characters.

In The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Bloom played Legolas, the skilled elf archer who became one of the franchise’s most popular characters. However, the role relied more on fantasy adventure than the kind of tough, physical action style Stallone was known for.

Bloom also starred as Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, where he played a romantic lead and a young blacksmith pulled into a pirate world. In Troy, he portrayed Paris, a character remembered more for his emotional choices than his fighting ability.

One of the few times Bloom stepped closer to a traditional action role was Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven. The historical epic gave him a larger warrior role, but the film received mixed reactions when it first arrived, with many critics focusing on the performances and story rather than calling Bloom an action star.

The difference between Stallone’s view of an action hero and Bloom’s career highlights how much the genre changed over the years. Stallone became famous through physically demanding roles like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, characters built around strength, survival, and intense combat.

By comparison, Bloom’s biggest roles were usually part of fantasy adventures, where action was only one part of a larger story. While he handled sword fights and battle scenes, he was not known as the kind of actor who carried an entire action movie alone.

Years later, Bloom did appear in the 2024 action thriller Red Right Hand, but by then Stallone’s opinion had already been made clear. For Stallone, being an action hero was not just about appearing in fight scenes. It was about having the presence, toughness, and reputation that defined stars from the genre’s golden era.

Whether fans agree with Stallone or not, his comments showed the actor’s belief that true action heroes are rare and that the title has to be earned through more than just a few memorable roles.
