‘Survival Of The Thickest’ returned to Netflix for a second round of fashion, friendship, and messy romance, and fans finally got answers about whether Mavis Beaumont was ever going to catch a break. Created by Michelle Buteau alongside Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, the comedy series debuted its long-awaited Season 2 on March 27, picking up the emotional cliffhanger that had viewers buzzing for two years.

This season finds Buteau’s charm and stiletto-sharp comedic delivery back for a much-anticipated follow-up, and the wait clearly paid off for longtime fans of the show.

Survival Of The Thickest Season 2 Plot Picks Up In Rome

The eight episode season begins in Rome, right where Season 1 left off, with Mavis having left her ex Jacques to return to Luca in Italy in hopes of making things work. The premiere reunites viewers with Mavis as she surprises Luca, and the two end up spending the night together before reality sets back in.

The following morning, Mavis apologizes for hurting Luca, though he tries to play it cool, and despite her hope that a week in Italy will be enough time to fix things, Luca has to return to work and leaves her to explore Rome alone.

Most fans may have hoped for a fairy tale ending right at the start of the season, but the show grounds itself by acknowledging that a grand romantic gesture does not erase the pain Mavis caused when she chose her toxic ex over Luca.

Instead of leaning on familiar rom-com tropes, the season digs into the complexities of modern relationships, intimacy, and dating from multiple perspectives. It is a smarter, more grounded choice that pays off across the back half of the season.

Mavis Beaumont And Her Friends Face New Challenges

Mavis is not the only one going through it this season. Khalil needs to sell paintings quickly to help his mother, and while his dealer Simone successfully sells his work, the two also find themselves attracted to each other, even though Simone has a rule against dating her artists.

Eventually Khalil decides he does not want his paintings collected by wealthy buyers who do not understand him, so he breaks the professional partnership, clearing the way for him and Simone to actually date. Khalil’s arc this season also involves confronting his tendency to self-sabotage relationships and undercut his own potential as an artist, and his decision to pursue therapy is treated with real emotional weight rather than just played for laughs.

Meanwhile, Tasha Smith’s Marley meets her match in Daphne, a city council member played by Jerrie Johnson who is just as smart, confident, and ambitious as Marley herself. The two circle each other throughout the season, which throws Marley off her usual dominance game and reveals new vulnerabilities for Smith to play with.

On the career front, Mavis finds a spot in Dumbo, Brooklyn that she believes is perfect for launching her own business, an idea sparked while trying to find Peppermint’s character a wedding dress in a space that was not built for plus-size bodies. Her goal becomes creating an inclusive space where people like Peppermint and herself can finally feel free to try things on and find clothes that actually fit.

Cast And New Additions Join Survival Of The Thickest Season 2

The returning ensemble includes Buteau, Tone Bell, Tasha Smith, Marouane Zotti, Peppermint, Garcelle Beauvais, Anthony Michael Lopez, and Liza Treyger. New guest stars joining the fold this season include Anderson .Paak, Deon Cole, Tika Sumpter, Monét X Change, Honey Balenciaga, Sandra Bernhard, and Bevy Smith.

The series is inspired by Buteau’s own acclaimed book of essays of the same name, and the first season followed Mavis as a stylist whose life is upended after catching her partner in bed with someone else. The expanded roster this season gives the world of ‘Survival Of The Thickest’ even more texture, especially with Sumpter’s Simone and Beauvais joining the established core trio.

How Does The Survival Of The Thickest Season 2 Finale End

The finale brings Mavis’s professional storyline to a head. In the final episode, Mavis takes a stand against a fashion designer who claims to be inclusive but fails to actually cater to plus-size women, and her protest quickly goes viral, sparking a tense public fallout.

The situation escalates further when Mavis is invited onto a podcast interview that ends up worsening the conflict instead of clarifying her stance, leaving her with a tarnished reputation and a career hanging in the balance. Things get even messier on a radio appearance, where Mavis ends up in a heated argument with Renee that also pulls in the audience.

After reflecting on her assistant’s advice, Mavis decides to pursue Renee for a collaboration, reminding him of his roots and how he originally got into fashion wanting to make a prom dress for his plus-size sister, and he agrees to work with her. By the end, Luca shows up to support Mavis after everything has settled, bringing her flowers, and after a moment involving a stolen taxi, Mavis pulls him back into the car, signaling she is still interested in him even as she also realizes she wants to become a mother.

Speaking with TODAY about the finale, Buteau described the moment as a culmination of everything Mavis has been working toward, explaining that inclusivity is about creating spaces where everyone can truly see themselves, and adding that Mavis has come a long way in learning to love herself first before figuring out whether she can share that love with someone else.

Reaction to the season has been largely warm. One Rotten Tomatoes critic praised the show for centering fat bodies, queer bodies, and Black women’s bodies in a way audiences rarely get to see on screen, while the season’s ending suggests Mavis has finally forgiven Luca and might give him another chance.

With Mavis’s love life still unresolved and a baby on her mind, where do you think ‘Survival Of The Thickest’ should take her and Luca if Season 3 happens?
