Timothée Chalamet & Selena Gomez Team Up for New Alien Rom-Com ‘Not Alone’ — First Look Revealed
Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez are heading into space for a brand-new animated adventure. The two stars are joining forces for Illumination’s upcoming film Not Alone, a romantic comedy with a sci-fi twist that mixes love, rockets, and three unexpected alien visitors.
The first details about the movie were revealed during the Annecy Animation Festival, where Illumination announced the project and introduced the characters that Chalamet and Gomez will bring to life.
Not Alone will mark Chalamet’s first animated role. According to the film’s announcement, he will voice Joe, a quiet and shy rocket mechanic who prefers living a simple life away from others. Selena Gomez will play Fran, a talented astro-botanist who is working on a groundbreaking project: creating the world’s first plant-powered rocket.
The story begins when Joe and Fran are brought together to help prepare Fran’s revolutionary rocket for its first launch. While the two quickly develop a connection, romance does not come easily for either of them.
The official synopsis describes their relationship as one filled with awkward moments before their lives become even more complicated. “When Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the inaugural launch of this revolutionary rocket, there are immediate sparks, but neither is particularly adept at romance,” the synopsis says.
Things change when three small aliens suddenly arrive on Earth looking for a safe place to hide. The aliens, named Dunk, Welly, and Shirm, escape to Joe’s home while trying to avoid a determined but not exactly skilled officer named Zandro.
The three aliens believe Fran’s special rocket could be their chance to return home safely, forcing Joe and Fran into a much bigger adventure than they ever expected.
The alien trio will be voiced by Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, and Jamie Demetriou. Brett Goldstein will take on the role of Officer Zandro, while Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris are also part of the supporting cast.
Illumination is bringing together several experienced filmmakers for the project. Not Alone will be co-directed by Eric Guillon, known for his work on Despicable Me 3 and his designs for the Despicable Me and Minions franchises, along with Claire Dodgson, who worked as an editor on The Lorax and Minions, and Jonathan Del Val, who co-directed Minions: The Rise of Gru and The Secret Life of Pets 2.
The movie is being produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, with Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis, and David Distenfeld serving as executive producers.
Not Alone is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 16, 2027. The film continues Illumination’s push into original animated stories while the studio remains known for major franchises such as Despicable Me and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The announcement comes after Illumination’s latest release, Minions & Monsters, which premiered at Annecy and received positive reactions from critics. The studio is now looking ahead with Not Alone, a film that combines a classic romantic comedy setup with a family-friendly alien adventure.
With Chalamet making his animation debut and Gomez joining the project as a lead voice actor, the movie is already attracting attention as one of Illumination’s upcoming major releases.
