Netflix has officially announced when fans will be able to enter Willy Wonka’s famous chocolate factory. According to TVLine and Netflix, the new competition series “Wonka’s The Golden Ticket” will premiere on September 23, with the first seven episodes arriving on the streaming service. The final two episodes will be released one week later on September 30.

The series is inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” which also served as the basis for the beloved 1971 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” However, this new project is not a remake or scripted drama. Instead, it is a reality competition where contestants must survive a series of challenges inside a recreated version of Wonka’s magical factory.

One of the biggest surprises revealed alongside the release date is the return of Gene Wilder’s voice. Netflix confirmed that the legendary actor’s voice has been recreated with artificial intelligence for the series. The company also stated that the project was completed with the full approval of Wilder’s estate. The newly released teaser gives viewers a brief preview of the experience. As contestants gather outside the famous factory gates, Wilder’s recognizable voice welcomes them.

“For the first time in decades, I’m opening my beloved chocolate factory,” the voice says before warning that not everyone will make it through the adventure.

The competition will feature 12 teams of two entering the mysterious factory. According to Netflix’s official description, the contestants will face a variety of games and unexpected tests that challenge them physically, mentally, and morally.

The streaming service describes the series as a social experiment where players must adapt to unpredictable situations while trying to prove they have the intelligence, determination, and character needed to succeed. Only one contestant will leave with Wonka’s grand prize.

Netflix also confirmed that Rusty Goffe, who played one of the Oompa Loompas in the original 1971 movie, will return for the new series, creating another connection to the classic film.

Gene Wilder’s family has publicly supported the decision to recreate his voice. In a statement released on behalf of the Gene Wilder Estate, his wife Karen B. Wilder said the family believes the series honors the actor’s unforgettable performance.

“More than five decades after Gene brought Willy Wonka to life, people of all ages and backgrounds around the world continue to find joy, laughter and inspiration in his performance,” the statement reads. She continued by praising the impact Wilder had on generations of fans.

“Gene had a remarkable ability to bring humor, wonder and heart into people’s lives, and that connection has endured for generations.” Karen B. Wilder also said the family is happy that the new series introduces Wonka’s magic to younger audiences while respecting longtime fans.

“We are delighted that ‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’ celebrates the warmth and imagination that he brought to the role, introducing that magic to a new generation while honoring the fans who have cherished it for decades.”

The new competition series continues the long history of Roald Dahl’s famous story. Since the novel was first published in 1964, it has inspired several adaptations, including the 1971 movie starring Gene Wilder, Tim Burton’s 2005 version with Johnny Depp, and the 2023 musical prequel “Wonka,” led by Timothée Chalamet.

Now Netflix is taking the story in a different direction by turning the famous chocolate factory into the setting for a reality competition. With familiar locations, classic references, and Gene Wilder’s recreated voice guiding contestants through the adventure, the series aims to combine nostalgia with a fresh format when it premieres this September.
