Beau DeMayo was once seen as one of Marvel’s most exciting new voices. As the creator and showrunner of X-Men ’97, he helped bring back one of the company’s most beloved animated franchises and delivered a major success for Disney+.

But behind the scenes, his time at Marvel ended in controversy, leading to a public dispute with the studio, legal action, and questions about what happened between DeMayo and the company.

According to Vanity Fair, DeMayo spent three years working on X-Men ’97, from 2021 to 2024. The series was a revival of the classic 1990s X-Men animated show and followed characters including Wolverine, Storm, Jean Grey, Magneto, and Professor X. The series became a major hit for Disney+, earning strong reviews and attracting millions of viewers after its release.

The first season received a 99% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and was praised by fans and industry figures. Even before the show premiered, DeMayo had already completed scripts for the second season. The success appeared to place him among Marvel’s rising creative talents.

However, just days before X-Men ’97 premiered, DeMayo said he received a surprising call from Disney’s human resources department. He was informed that he had been fired immediately after an internal investigation.

Marvel later released a statement saying, “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”

Months later, Variety reported that a source familiar with the situation claimed the investigation involved allegations of sexual misconduct. Marvel did not provide additional comments about the allegations. DeMayo denied the claims and said they were false.

In a video statement shared online in September 2024, DeMayo said, “The rumors being spread around me online are lies, and they are offensive.” He also accused Marvel of creating what he described as a toxic workplace and claimed the company was trying to damage his reputation. Marvel has not publicly responded to those specific accusations.

Speaking with Vanity Fair after his departure, DeMayo described himself as someone who fought hard to make X-Men ’97 successful while dealing with difficult working conditions. He also said he believed his identity as a queer Black man may have played a role in how he was treated at Marvel.

DeMayo claimed that some people at the company made comments that made him feel like he was not respected as a leader. He said he heard comments suggesting he did not fit the image of a traditional showrunner. According to DeMayo, he felt there was an attitude that he had only been hired because of diversity efforts.

Despite the conflict, X-Men ’97 became a huge success. Marvel moved forward with a second season, although reports said some of DeMayo’s original scripts were changed after his exit. Jake Castorena took over as supervising producer, and Matthew Chauncey was later hired as head writer for the third season.

The controversy also brought attention to DeMayo’s online presence. During his time at Marvel, he was known for sharing fitness photos and posts about comics, superheroes, and his personal life. After leaving the studio, his online activity became more public and included adult content on OnlyFans.

DeMayo told Vanity Fair that he had been open with Marvel about his personal social media activity and believed it was separate from his professional work. He said the account started as a way to share fitness content and express confidence after struggling with body image issues.

“When I was growing up, I had such a massive shame about my body and physical appearance, both racially and sexually. The more I confronted that, the more proud I became,” DeMayo told the magazine.

His decision to become an adult content creator became another source of discussion. Some people close to him supported his right to express himself, while others questioned whether it could affect his career. Vanity Fair spoke with people who knew DeMayo and reported mixed reactions to his online choices.

For DeMayo, comic books have always been an important part of his life. He has spoken about how superhero stories helped him deal with feeling different while growing up. He was adopted by white parents and said comics helped him understand ideas about identity and belonging.

Before joining X-Men ’97, DeMayo worked on several major projects, including The Originals, The Witcher, and Marvel’s Moon Knight. He said he joined Marvel because it was a dream opportunity and that he was excited to help tell a new X-Men story.

He also worked on the Blade reboot, helping develop the screenplay before his departure from Marvel. According to DeMayo’s lawsuit, he experienced discrimination and unsafe working conditions during his time with the company. Marvel has not confirmed those claims.

DeMayo later sued Marvel, seeking legal relief over a non-disparagement agreement he signed after leaving the studio. According to Vanity Fair, the case remains active and is expected to go to trial in 2027.

Since the controversy began, DeMayo has become quieter online. His social media accounts now focus more on comics, fitness, and personal interests rather than his fight with Marvel. While his future projects remain unclear, his work on X-Men ’97 has already left a major mark on the franchise.

The story of Beau DeMayo and Marvel remains unresolved, with both sides offering very different versions of what happened. What is clear is that X-Men ’97 became a major success, while the conflict surrounding its creator turned into one of Marvel’s most talked-about behind-the-scenes controversies.
