Fans who missed Project Hail Mary in theaters will not have to wait much longer to watch it at home. Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed that the hit sci-fi movie will begin streaming on Prime Video on Friday, July 3, after completing its theatrical release window.

The movie first became available on MGM+ on June 18 before making its way to Prime Video. Deadline explained that this happened because Project Hail Mary followed Amazon MGM Studios’ traditional release strategy. That means the film was released in theaters first, then became available through premium video-on-demand services, followed by MGM+, and finally Prime Video. Other Amazon-backed movies, like Red One, were originally made for Prime Video, so they reached the streaming platform much sooner after their theatrical run.

Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling alongside Sandra Hüller and is based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, the author of The Martian. The story follows a middle school science teacher whose ordinary life changes overnight when he is chosen for an important space mission. He suddenly finds himself carrying the responsibility of a mission that could determine the future of humanity.

The film was directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who brought Weir’s novel to the big screen with a screenplay written by Drew Goddard. The production team included Amy Pascal, Ryan Gosling, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Andy Weir, Rachel O’Connor, and Aditya Sood.

Project Hail Mary turned into one of the biggest success stories at the spring box office. According to Deadline, the movie earned more than $683 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it one of Amazon MGM Studios’ strongest-performing releases. The impressive box office results helped the film become one of the year’s biggest sci-fi hits and attracted audiences around the world.

The studio is also preparing a major awards campaign for the movie later this year. Deadline reports that Amazon MGM Studios plans to push Project Hail Mary during awards season, showing confidence that the film could receive recognition in several major categories.

The streaming release now gives even more viewers the chance to experience the adventure from home. Many fans who either missed it in theaters or wanted to watch it again will finally be able to stream the film on Prime Video beginning July 3.

The movie’s journey from theaters to streaming also highlights Amazon MGM Studios’ release strategy. Instead of sending every title directly to Prime Video, some films still follow a more traditional path through cinemas and premium home releases before arriving on the company’s main streaming platform. According to Deadline, this approach helped maximize the film’s successful theatrical run before making it available to subscribers.

With Ryan Gosling leading the cast, a story based on one of modern science fiction’s most popular novels, and strong box office numbers already behind it, Project Hail Mary is expected to reach an even larger audience once it lands on Prime Video. For viewers looking for a mix of science fiction, adventure, humor, and emotional storytelling, the streaming debut offers another chance to see one of the year’s biggest movie successes.
