Netflix’s true crime slate just added another gripping entry, and ‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ has viewers hooked on its second episode, “Midwest Meltdown.” The case centers on Monserrate “Moncy” Shirley and her boyfriend Mark Leonard, whose relationship set off a chain of events that devastated an entire Indiana subdivision.

Now that the docuseries has pulled this decade old case back into the spotlight, audiences are searching for what actually happened to Mark Leonard after his conviction. The answer, it turns out, closes the book on one of the more chilling true crime stories Netflix has told this year.

The Richmond Hill Explosion That Shattered A Community

Moncy Shirley had been a beloved figure in Richmond Hill, Indiana, a close knit subdivision outside Indianapolis where neighbors considered themselves genuine friends. She was described as a foundational part of the tight-knit community and was beloved by many before things began to change. That shift came after her divorce from her husband John, which altered her standing among the friends she had made over the years.

In 2011, Moncy introduced her new boyfriend, Mark Leonard, to her neighbors, seemingly hoping to rebuild old bonds that had frayed since her divorce. His arrival raised eyebrows almost immediately, largely because of his visible criminal record.

Some neighbors even noticed an ankle monitor on him, a detail that made the community wary of the newest addition to their once tight social circle.

On November 10, 2012, Moncy’s house exploded, killing two people nearby, injuring dozens of others, and destroying upwards of 30 homes in the process. Investigators later determined the natural gas explosion had been intentionally set at the home to collect a 300,000 dollar insurance payout.

Mark Leonard’s Role In The Insurance Fraud Scheme

Investigators discovered that Mark Leonard had been linked to a number of insurance fraud allegations and other scams well before the Richmond Hill explosion. Years earlier, in 2009, a woman he had met on an online dating site after her husband’s death filed a small claims case against him in Danville, Indiana, after he failed to repay a substantial sum of money he had borrowed from her.

They filled the house with natural gas and used a spark from a microwave, which could be set to go off later, to trigger the blast.

The couple reportedly attempted the plan twice before it succeeded on November 10, having left the house on similar casino trips the two previous weekends without the explosion taking hold.

Moncy, Mark Leonard, and three other men were eventually found responsible for the scheme, and while it appears they never intended to kill anyone, their insurance scam turned deadly. Mark Leonard was widely considered the mastermind behind the explosion, which made his involvement especially difficult for Moncy’s former neighbors to process.

The Legal Fallout For Moncy Shirley And The Leonard Brothers

Moncy Shirley ultimately pled guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit arson and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. She avoided a possible sentence of life without parole thanks to a plea deal in which she agreed to testify against her co-conspirators and hand over information about the insurance fraud scheme.

Mark Leonard was found guilty of 53 counts, including felony murder and arson, and received two life imprisonment terms plus an additional 75 years. His brother, identified in reporting as both Bob and Bill Leonard, was convicted of 51 counts, including murder and arson, and was sentenced to two life terms without parole plus an additional 70 years. Additional men, Gary Thompson and Glenn Hults, were also charged in connection with the scheme in the years that followed.

Where Is Mark Leonard Today

Mark Leonard passed away from a blood disorder in 2018 while incarcerated. Reporting on the case confirms he died of natural causes behind bars that same year. That means the man ‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ paints as the architect of the Richmond Hill explosion never lived to see his case retold to a new generation of true crime viewers.

Moncy Shirley remains in prison but will not spend the rest of her life behind bars, having accepted responsibility and cooperated with prosecutors. Bob Leonard, by contrast, remains incarcerated under his life sentence without the possibility of parole. The contrast between the fates of the three central figures adds an extra layer of unease to an already unsettling episode of the series.

With ‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ bringing the Richmond Hill explosion back into public conversation, it’s worth asking what still lingers for viewers watching Moncy’s story unfold on screen. Do you think Mark Leonard’s death behind bars closes the door on this case, or does Richmond Hill deserve more answers about how far his scams really went?
