Did Minions Work for Hitler? ‘Minions & Monsters’ Explores the Franchise’s Strangest Mystery

The Minions have always been known as silly, lovable characters who follow the biggest villains they can find. But a strange fan theory about their past has returned after the release of Minions & Monsters, bringing back one of the franchise’s most unusual questions: Could some Minions have worked for Adolf Hitler during World War II?

The theory has existed among fans for years because of the Minions’ history of serving powerful and dangerous figures. Before joining Gru in the Despicable Me movies, the creatures were shown helping some of history’s most famous villains, including fictional characters like Dracula and real-world figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte.

That led fans to wonder what the Minions were doing between 1939 and 1945. If they spent their lives searching for the “biggest, baddest” leaders, many viewers questioned whether that meant some Minions could have ended up working for Hitler during World War II.

The 2015 movie Minions tried to avoid the topic by explaining that the main group of Minions disappeared into a cave after accidentally causing problems for their previous bosses. They remained there from 1812 until 1968, meaning the Minions seen in the movie were not around during World War II.

However, Minions & Monsters changes the conversation by introducing a new idea: there are multiple Minion tribes around the world. That opens the door to more questions about what other groups of Minions were doing throughout history.

Director Pierre Coffin, who has worked on several Minions films and voices the characters, was asked about the controversial fan theory by Polygon. He admitted he expected the question to come up.

“I knew you were going to ask me that question. Shame on you,” Coffin joked.

When asked if Minions could have served Hitler, Coffin first tried to avoid giving a direct answer. “I think they were in that cave,” he said, referring to the original group of Minions from the 2015 film.

But when it was pointed out that Minions & Monsters introduces different tribes, Coffin acknowledged that the answer was more complicated. “I was trying to avoid the answer,” he admitted.

Coffin then explained that the Minions viewers already know were not connected to Hitler or World War II. “So the Minions that we know from Minions 1 were stuck in the cave. These ones, I don’t know where they were, but they were not part of the Big History,” he said.

While Coffin’s comments do not confirm that any Minions worked for Hitler, they also leave room for future stories to explore other groups of Minions and their strange adventures throughout history.

Minions & Monsters expands the franchise by showing that the yellow creatures are not just one single group following the same path. The movie introduces new possibilities for the characters, including Minions who do not want to serve villains at all.

The film follows James, an artistic Minion who has no interest in being evil and instead dreams of making movies. His story shows that Minions may not all share the same goals, which makes their mysterious past even more interesting.

For now, the Hitler theory remains one of the strangest unanswered questions in the Minions universe. But with the franchise now exploring different Minion groups, fans may not have to wait forever for more answers about what these characters were really doing throughout history.
