Netflix Finally Explains Why It Canceled ‘The Boroughs’ After One Season
Netflix has finally addressed one of the most surprising cancellations of the year. Despite strong reviews and impressive viewing numbers, the sci-fi series The Boroughs will not return for a second season, and the streaming giant says the decision came down to more than just popularity.
The series quickly became a success after its debut, earning praise from critics and building a large audience around its unusual focus on older characters in a science fiction story. The show currently holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and reached the number one spot on Netflix’s global chart shortly after release. It also remained in the platform’s global Top 10 for four weeks.
The Boroughs had another major advantage behind it as well. The series was executive produced by Ross and Matt Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, which helped attract attention from fans looking for another mystery-driven sci-fi hit. The show also stood out by placing older characters at the center of the story, giving it a different feel compared to many modern genre projects.
Because of all those factors, many fans were confused when Netflix announced that The Boroughs would end after only one season. Some viewers believed the cancellation was connected to the Duffer Brothers’ decision to move their future projects toward Paramount after signing a deal with the studio. However, Netflix says the reason was much simpler: the numbers did not justify the cost.
According to Netflix, The Boroughs was an expensive series to produce, with each episode reportedly costing around $10 million. While the show attracted millions of viewers, the company decided that its overall performance was not enough to support the budget required for future seasons.
Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of UCAN Scripted Series, addressed the cancellation in a recent interview and explained that several factors were considered before the final decision was made. She said the company was careful when evaluating the future of the series.
“There were a lot of different factors that weighed into that decision in particular,” Howe explained. She also praised the work behind the show and said Netflix was proud of what the creators delivered. “We’re really, really proud of that show, we think they delivered a very entertaining cinematic experience for many, many people who loved it,” Howe said.
The cancellation remains surprising because The Boroughs reportedly reached more than 20 million viewers during its first four weeks on Netflix. However, the streaming service has increasingly focused on balancing audience size with production costs, meaning even successful shows can be canceled if they are considered too expensive compared to their impact.

The situation highlights one of the biggest challenges facing streaming series today. A show can receive strong reviews, attract millions of viewers, and still struggle to earn a renewal if the financial side does not work.
What do you think about Netflix canceling ‘The Boroughs’ after one season?
For now, all episodes of The Boroughs’ first and only season remain available on Netflix. While fans will not get a continuation of the story, the series joins a growing list of popular shows that ended earlier than audiences expected.
