Marvel’s New X-Men Art for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Confirms the Movie’s Lineup of Mutants
Fox’s original X-Men trilogy shaped an entire generation’s idea of what a superhero movie could look like, long before the MCU existed as we know it today. Actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Rebecca Romijn helped define characters that would go on to inspire two decades of comic book cinema, even as their own corner of the Marvel universe eventually got left behind when Disney and Marvel Studios built their own separate continuity.
That separation officially ended when Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox brought the mutant rights back under one roof, setting off years of speculation about exactly how and when these legacy characters would finally cross over. Fans got their first real confirmation during a Doomsday teaser that played ahead of Avatar Fire and Ash screenings, marking the return of Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Cyclops for the first time in over a decade.
That excitement has now reached a new peak. The official artwork of the full X-Men lineup for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ confirms seven mutants standing together for the film, including Gambit, Mystique, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Beast, Magneto, and Professor X.
All four original cast members from 2000’s X-Men, Stewart, McKellen, Marsden, and Romijn, are returning to their roles, joined by Kelsey Grammer reprising Beast and Alan Cumming stepping back into Nightcrawler for the first time since 2003’s X2: X-Men United. Channing Tatum also returns as Gambit, continuing the role he finally got to play in Deadpool and Wolverine after spending years trying to get a solo Gambit film off the ground at Fox.
The costume designs revealed alongside the lineup lean heavily into fan service, with Cyclops, Mystique, and Nightcrawler sporting comic-accurate looks, while Magneto wears a red-toned version of his original X-Men trilogy suit and Professor X has returned to his classic silver wheelchair instead of the yellow hoverchair seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Beast has also received a notable redesign, appearing shirtless for the first time in live action to show off his blue fur-covered torso rather than the lab coat or uniform he previously wore.
Nightcrawler’s inclusion has reignited long-standing fan hopes that the film will finally confirm Mystique as his mother, a connection X2 teased but neither X-Men Apocalypse nor X-Men Dark Phoenix ever fully explored despite the characters sharing screen time. Leaked footage from an early screening reportedly showed Channing Tatum’s Gambit facing off against Shang-Chi, along with a chaotic Mystique battle against Yelena Belova that used the character’s shapeshifting abilities to create multiple versions of the assassin on screen.
Which X-Men character are you most excited to see?
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is dated for December 18, 2026, with the ensemble also including Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, and Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom, alongside the Fantastic Four cast of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss Bachrach. With this new official artwork confirming just how central the X-Men will be to the film’s massive ensemble, it looks like Marvel is finally ready to give this long-awaited crossover the spotlight fans have wanted for years.
