Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is heading into theaters with massive expectations, and early box office projections suggest the director’s latest epic could become his biggest opening in more than a decade.

According to Variety, the film is expected to earn between $90 million and $100 million during its opening weekend in North America. If it reaches that range, it would mark Nolan’s strongest debut since 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, which opened with $160 million. A $100 million-plus debut would also make ‘The Odyssey’ one of the few films this year to reach that milestone.

The projected opening is a major vote of confidence for a movie that carries a huge budget and even bigger expectations. The film reportedly cost around $250 million to produce, making it one of the most expensive projects of Nolan’s career. Universal Pictures is also spending heavily on marketing, with the studio launching a worldwide campaign that includes major promotional events in cities like London, Paris, and Mumbai.

Much of the excitement comes from Nolan’s reputation as a filmmaker who can turn ambitious ideas into major box office successes. His previous film, ‘Oppenheimer’, became a surprise global phenomenon despite being a three-hour R-rated historical drama about the creation of the atomic bomb. The movie opened with $82 million domestically and eventually earned nearly $1 billion worldwide, proving Nolan’s name alone has become a major selling point.

Now, ‘The Odyssey’ is looking to build on that momentum. Unlike ‘Oppenheimer’, Nolan’s newest film is a large-scale adventure based on Homer’s legendary Greek epic. The movie follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War while facing mythical creatures and impossible challenges along the way.

The film also features one of Nolan’s biggest casts yet, with Tom Holland playing Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, while Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal appear in supporting roles.

Another major factor behind the anticipation is the movie’s unique presentation. ‘The Odyssey’ is the first feature film ever shot entirely using IMAX cameras, something Nolan has wanted to achieve for years. The director has been a longtime supporter of theatrical experiences and has continued pushing audiences toward seeing his movies on the biggest screens possible.

Because of that connection, IMAX is giving ‘The Odyssey’ a major spotlight, with the company dedicating its screens to the movie during its opening weeks. The strategy follows the success of ‘Oppenheimer’, which earned around $180 million from IMAX screenings alone. Demand for premium screenings became so intense that some fans traveled across states and attended early morning showings just to experience the film in 70mm.

The release also arrives during a busy summer movie season. According to industry estimates, the domestic box office is on track for one of its strongest summers since before the pandemic. After several recent disappointments, Hollywood is hoping major releases like ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ can bring audiences back to theaters in a big way.

With Nolan’s track record, a star-studded cast, and one of the most ambitious technical presentations ever attempted, ‘The Odyssey’ is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic events of 2026. Whether it reaches its projected $100 million opening or goes even higher, the film is already proving that audiences are still willing to show up for a true big-screen spectacle.
