Stephen King has spoken out after one of his best-known books was banned from every public school in Utah, calling attention to a decision that has already sparked debate online.

The author reacted after Different Seasons was added to Utah’s statewide list of banned books under the state’s sensitive materials law. The 1982 novella collection is especially well known because it includes the stories that inspired two of the most beloved films ever made, The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me.

King did not hide his frustration when responding on X. He questioned why a book centered on friendship, hope, and courage had become the latest target of the state’s book restrictions.

“They banned DIFFERENT SEASONS in Utah. Contains STAND BY ME and THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, stories of friendship and courage. Readable by teens, too. What’s wrong with these people?” King wrote in his post.

His comments quickly spread across social media, with many readers expressing support for the author while others defended the state’s decision under its current law.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Different Seasons was removed after several Utah school districts determined that parts of the book contained material that met the state’s legal definition of “objective sensitive material.” The review documents from the Davis School District specifically pointed to passages describing “genitals in a state of sexual stimulation or arousal” when explaining why the collection qualified for removal.

Utah’s law, which took effect in 2024, allows a book to be banned from every public school in the state once enough school districts or charter schools have already removed it. In this case, Different Seasons had been pulled from the Davis, Jordan, Washington County, and Tooele County school districts before being added to the statewide list.

Although the book is often remembered because of its famous movie adaptations, Different Seasons actually contains four separate novellas. Alongside Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which became The Shawshank Redemption, and The Body, which was adapted into Stand By Me, the collection also includes Apt Pupil and The Breathing Method.

Over the years, Different Seasons has been praised as one of King’s strongest non-horror works. While he built his career on supernatural stories, this collection focused more on human relationships, morality, and coming-of-age themes. Both The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me have gone on to become modern classics, regularly appearing on lists of the greatest films ever made.

Do you think Stephen King's 'Different Seasons' should be banned from public schools?

The decision also adds Different Seasons to a growing list of books removed from Utah public schools since the law was introduced. The statewide policy has led to dozens of titles being banned after meeting the legal threshold established by lawmakers, making Utah one of the most closely watched states in the ongoing national debate over books in school libraries.

King has frequently criticized book bans and censorship throughout his career, arguing that readers should have access to a wide range of literature even when it contains challenging themes. His latest response continues that long-standing position, as he questions why a collection known for stories of hope and friendship is no longer available to students in Utah’s public schools.

The debate surrounding Different Seasons is unlikely to end anytime soon. While supporters of the law argue it protects students from explicit material, critics believe it removes important works of literature from classrooms and libraries. King’s response has once again put the issue in the spotlight, turning a state-level decision into a national conversation about censorship, education, and who gets to decide what young readers can access.
