Matt Damon Mistook Tom Holland’s Wardrobe Malfunction for a Touching Father-Son Moment on ‘The Odyssey’
‘The Odyssey‘ has given its stars plenty to talk about on the press circuit, and Matt Damon has proven to be one of the more entertaining storytellers of the bunch. Between discussing the sheer scale of Christopher Nolan’s production and the physical toll the shoot took on everyone involved, Damon has peppered his interviews with the kind of behind-the-scenes anecdotes that tend to go viral.
His stop on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week delivered exactly that kind of moment, with Damon sitting down to talk about his work on the Homer adaptation ahead of its release. The conversation eventually turned to the film’s central father-son relationship between Damon’s Odysseus and Tom Holland’s Telemachus, and that setup led directly into one of the more charming mishaps from the shoot.
Damon told Fallon about a scene where his character is separated from Holland’s, with Odysseus positioned on a boat and Telemachus standing on the shore. He explained that he noticed Holland placing a hand over his heart during the moment, and assumed it was a spontaneous, emotional acting choice, so he began mirroring the gesture himself without knowing why Holland was actually doing it.
It was not until later that day that Damon learned the truth. When the two reconnected after filming, Damon asked Holland whether Nolan had specifically directed him to place his hand on his heart, only for Holland to reveal that his costume had simply been choking him and that he was tugging at his collar for relief rather than delivering a poignant gesture.
Damon leaned into his own poor eyesight as the reason for the mix-up, joking that he is nearsighted and that from where he was standing on the boat, Holland’s movement genuinely looked like a salute meant to convey a father-son moment between their characters. He confirmed to Fallon that the misunderstood gesture never made it into the finished film, since it was never meant to be part of the scene in the first place.
The story fit right into the broader tone of Damon’s Tonight Show appearance, where he also detailed just how demanding the six-month shoot across six countries had been for the entire cast and crew. He told Fallon it was the hardest and most challenging film he has ever been part of, crediting Nolan’s insistence on practical effects, real boats, and massive live extras over CGI for making the production feel even more grueling than a typical blockbuster.

Damon also used the appearance to describe some of the more elaborate practical sequences from the shoot, including a scene involving stunt performers buried in black sand and breathing through snorkels to portray spirits rising from the ground. That kind of hands-on filmmaking approach, paired with safety monitors tracking how long each performer had been underground, gave Damon plenty of material to illustrate just how far Nolan pushed his crew to avoid digital shortcuts wherever possible.
Fans reacting to the clip have found the mix-up especially funny given how seriously Nolan is known to take his sets, with many pointing out that the story captures the kind of genuine, unscripted chemistry between Damon and Holland that has defined much of the film’s press tour. The anecdote joins a growing list of behind-the-scenes stories the two actors have shared while promoting the movie.
What do you think of Matt Damon mistaking Tom Holland’s costume issue for an emotional acting moment?
‘The Odyssey’ opens in theaters on July 17, following preview screenings the night before, and also stars Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Himesh Patel, Robert Pattinson, and Jon Bernthal.
