Sam Neill, one of the most recognizable actors of his generation, has died at the age of 78, and new details about his passing have now been revealed

Neill’s death marked the end of a decades-long career that saw him become a favorite among audiences around the world. While many fans remember him as Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park, the New Zealand actor built an impressive filmography that included everything from science fiction and horror to drama and comedy.

Neill passed away on July 13 after a long and successful career that made him one of the most respected actors in film and television.

The actor died from pneumonia, according to his longtime representative Philip Grenz, who confirmed the cause of death to Entertainment Weekly.

According to Grenz, Neill’s family plans to keep his farewell private. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, he explained that the actor did not enjoy public attention around personal matters.

“As Sam was an intensely private man who loathed a fuss, his family will honor him with a private family memorial at his farm in New Zealand at a still-undetermined later date,” Grenz said.

He also thanked those close to Neill for respecting the family’s privacy during a difficult time.

Before his death, Neill had faced a serious health battle. In 2022, he was diagnosed with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of blood cancer. However, the actor later revealed that he was cancer free after receiving treatment, including chemotherapy and CAR T-cell therapy.

In an interview with Australian program 7NEWS in April, Neill shared the positive news about his recovery.

“I’ve had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body. This is an extraordinary thing,” he said.

Despite his health challenges, Neill continued working. His representative revealed that the actor filmed four projects back-to-back during the final year of his life, with several of those projects still scheduled for release.

Among his upcoming appearances is The Last Resort, a romantic comedy directed by Donald Petrie, which also stars Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich. He was also set to appear in the upcoming monster film Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

Grenz also shared that Neill’s family would prefer fans to honor his memory through donations instead of flowers. The family suggested supporting causes that were important to the actor, including organizations focused on healthcare, cancer research, and protecting New Zealand’s natural environment.

Neill became a worldwide star after playing Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park. He returned to the role in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World: Dominion. Beyond the dinosaur franchise, he appeared in films such as Event Horizon, Possession, The Piano, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

His television work was equally impressive, with roles in shows including The Tudors and Peaky Blinders. Throughout his career, Neill earned multiple award nominations, including Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. In 2025, he won Best Lead Actor in a Drama at the Australian Logie Awards for his performance in The Twelve.

In 2023, Neill released his memoir Did I Ever Tell You This?, which he wrote while undergoing cancer treatment. The book gave fans a more personal look at his life, career, and experiences away from the spotlight.

Neill is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy as an actor who brought depth, humor, and humanity to some of cinema’s most memorable characters.
