‘The Long Walk’ Star Cooper Hoffman Is Reportedly Marvel’s Wild Card Pick to Play Cyclops in the ‘X-Men’ Reboot
Marvel Studios has been quietly assembling the pieces for its long-awaited ‘X-Men‘ reboot, and the casting rumor mill has kicked into overdrive as the studio reportedly races to lock down its main players. Jake Schreier, fresh off directing ‘Thunderbolts’, is steering the project, with writers Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo said to be actively working on the script.
Names have been swirling for weeks now, from Adam Driver’s rumored villain role to Bill Skarsgard being floated for a younger take on Professor X. None of these reports have been confirmed by Marvel or the major trades, but the sourcing keeps coming from insiders whose past scoops have proven reliable enough to take seriously.
The latest name to enter the conversation is arguably the most unexpected one yet. According to industry insider Apocalyptic Horseman, Cooper Hoffman is in the mix to play Scott Summers, better known to fans as Cyclops, the field leader of the X-Men.
A separate insider going by MTTSH went a step further, describing Hoffman as Marvel’s actual top choice for the role rather than simply one name among several under consideration. Hoffman, the son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, has built his reputation on acclaimed performances in ‘The Long Walk’, ‘Licorice Pizza’, and ‘Poetic License’, a resume that leans dramatic rather than action heavy.
That contrast is exactly why this particular rumor has proven divisive among fans. Cyclops has traditionally been portrayed as a square-jawed, confident field commander, and Hoffman’s filmography so far has not put him anywhere near that kind of role, making him feel like a genuine outside-the-box pick if the reports hold up.
At 23 years old, Hoffman would be roughly the same age as Sadie Sink, who is separately rumored to be playing Jean Grey in the broader Marvel mutant universe following her reported appearance in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. That detail lines up with comments from Marvel boss Kevin Feige describing the reboot as a youth-oriented take on the franchise.
Hoffman’s career has been picking up serious momentum regardless of how this rumor shakes out. He is set to star in Hulu’s drama pilot ‘Durango’ alongside Kathryn Newton, and he currently has multiple films in post-production, including Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Artificial’ and ‘The Chaperones’.
It is worth stressing that none of this has been confirmed by Marvel Studios, and even the insiders reporting Hoffman’s involvement have noted he may not be the only actor under consideration for the part. The ‘X-Men’ reboot itself remains in a fairly early stage, with filming not expected to begin until next year, though pre-production could reportedly ramp up before the end of 2026.
What do you think about Cooper Hoffman reportedly being considered for Cyclops in Marvel’s X-Men reboot?
Given how quickly casting rumors have been flying with San Diego Comic-Con approaching, fans should expect the speculation around Cyclops and the rest of the mutant roster to only intensify in the coming weeks. Whether Hoffman actually ends up behind those ruby quartz visors remains very much up in the air.
