Dolph Lundgren built his career on playing the kind of stone-faced, unbreakable action heroes audiences never expected to open up about their personal lives. From Ivan Drago in ‘Rocky IV’ to his long-running role as Frank Castle in ‘The Punisher’, the Swedish actor has spent decades cultivating a tough guy image that rarely gave fans a glimpse behind the curtain.

That changed dramatically during a sit-down with Graham Bensinger, where Lundgren spent two days in Los Angeles walking through the highs and lows of his career, his health battles, and his complicated personal history. Buried inside that wide-ranging conversation was a story about his first marriage that has since taken on a life of its own online.

Lundgren married interior designer Anette Qviberg in February 1994, and the couple went on to have two daughters, Ida and Greta, before divorcing in 2011 after sixteen years together. During his conversation with Bensinger, Lundgren explained that his finances took a brutal hit during that marriage, dropping by roughly 90 percent between 1997 and 2007, even as his household expenses only continued to climb.

Speaking to Graham Bensinger, Lundgren described the arrangement in strikingly candid terms, revealing that his then-wife appeared to know about his affairs but seemed largely unbothered as long as he kept covering her bills and buying her expensive cars. He said the more he cheated, the more she spent, calling it a familiar pattern he had come to recognize.

According to Lundgren, those expenses added up to roughly 60,000 dollars a month in credit card bills alone, a figure that lines up closely with reports describing the arrangement as something close to a monthly fee for turning a blind eye to his infidelity. He explained that his own earnings shrank dramatically during this period, going from what he once made per film down to a small fraction of that amount.

Lundgren also connected part of that financial decline to stepping away from the traditional Hollywood spotlight during those years. He noted that being away from the industry made it easy to lose touch with the business side of things, even as the overhead of maintaining his lifestyle never let up, leaving him increasingly out of step with his own earning power.

The revelations are part of a broader, more vulnerable interview in which Lundgren also discussed his ongoing battle with cancer since 2015, his complicated but close relationship with longtime collaborator Sylvester Stallone, and the physical toll of decades spent performing dangerous stunts without modern safety precautions. His daughter Ida Lundgren and fiancée Emma Krokdal also appeared in the interview, alongside the UCLA doctor credited with helping save his life.

For an actor known for keeping his guard up on screen, the interview offered a rare and unusually detailed look at just how messy things got behind closed doors during one of the most financially turbulent stretches of his career. What do you make of Dolph Lundgren’s candid account of his first marriage, and were you surprised by how openly he discussed it. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
