Marketing campaigns for major blockbusters have become their own kind of spectacle in recent years, with studios competing almost as fiercely for online attention as they do for opening weekend dollars. Getting a film to feel inescapable, the kind of movie that dominates every screen from theater marquees to social media feeds, has become its own art form.

Few campaigns this year have managed that feat quite like the rollout behind Sony’s latest web-slinging adventure. From trailer premieres released in staggered pieces across the globe to behind-the-scenes footage of Tom Holland riding atop a tank, the promotional buildup was relentless well before opening weekend even arrived.

That buildup has now translated directly into results that Sony itself is celebrating loudly, with the studio’s newest promotional clip proudly branding ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ the number one movie in the world. The declaration isn’t just marketing bravado, either, since the film’s box office performance has backed up every bit of that confidence since its release.

Behind the scenes, the promotional push driving that dominance was itself historic. Sony’s promotional partner campaign for the film carried a worldwide media value of $309 million, setting an all-time record for any Hollywood film and surpassing the studio’s own previous benchmark of $288 million set by 2019’s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’

Sony’s EVP of Brand Strategy and Global Partnerships, Jeffrey Godsick, explained the reasoning behind casting such a wide promotional net, noting the film functions as a true eight-to-eighty-years-old experience built for everybody. The film’s trailer became the most-watched in motion picture and gaming industry history, pulling in 719 million views in its first 24 hours and surpassing 1.1 billion within four days.

That marketing muscle has been matched by genuine enthusiasm from Sony’s top executives. Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman spoke to why the film has connected so broadly with global audiences, telling Deadline, “Whether you live in Peru, Pakistan, or Peoria, everyone wants friends and wants connection with everyone. Fundamentally this is a movie about friendship and hope.”

Rothman also addressed the creative approach behind the marketing itself, pointing to a character-driven story built around Peter Parker and a complex, sympathetic villain in Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey. He described the guiding philosophy simply, saying the team led with emotion throughout the campaign.

The film’s box office trajectory has given Sony every reason to keep celebrating. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has become the second-fastest film ever to cross $1 billion at the global box office, building on a domestic opening of $360 million that stands as the biggest in North American box office history. It also posted a record Monday performance in the U.S. and Canada with $47 million.

Sony Pictures Entertainment’s chairman and CEO also publicly credited the studio’s creative team and filmmaking brass for delivering what he characterized as a character-driven, emotionally resonant film at a moment when some in the industry have questioned the superhero genre’s staying power. With numbers like these continuing to roll in weeks after release, calling it the number one movie in the world isn’t hyperbole so much as a simple statement of fact.

What is the biggest reason behind ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s’ massive success?
