James Marsden Says Cyclops Is Getting a Whole New Look and Attitude for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel’s biggest crossover event yet is shaping up to be as much about legacy as it is about spectacle, bringing together heroes who’ve never shared a screen before under the weight of a genuinely existential threat. Few returns carry as much nostalgic weight as the reunion of the original ‘X-Men’ cast, and James Marsden’s Cyclops is right at the center of that reunion.

Marsden first played Scott Summers back in 2000’s ‘X-Men,’ reprising the role across ‘X2’ and ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ before a brief cameo in ‘Days of Future Past.’ Now, more than two decades later, he’s stepping back into the role for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,‘ joining fellow franchise veterans Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as Professor X and Magneto in what marks the X-Men’s first true appearance inside an ‘Avengers’ film.

That reunion comes with a visual overhaul years in the making. Marsden has confirmed Cyclops will appear in a costume based on his original comic book look rather than the tight black leather suits the early films were known for, a shift he’s previously described as feeling far more comfortable and true to the character than what he wore filming the first movie alongside Hugh Jackman near the Statue of Liberty.

Beyond the wardrobe change, Marsden has framed the film’s premise in much bigger terms, describing it as an absolute collision of three gigantic universes coming together in the face of a very serious existential threat. That description lines up with Marvel’s official synopsis for the film, which confirms that heroes from three distinct universes will be forced onto a deadly collision course as the Multiverse Saga heads toward its conclusion.

Those three universes appear to be the mainline MCU timeline, the Fantastic Four’s universe introduced in this year’s ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ and the X-Men’s own separate reality finally merging with the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. Trailers have already teased glimpses of a devastated X-Mansion, a reunited Xavier and Magneto, and Sentinels awakened under Doctor Doom’s control, suggesting the mutant storyline carries real stakes heading into the crossover.

Marsden’s costume comments echo a broader shift for the returning X-Men cast, all of whom are stepping into designs meant to reflect decades of comic book evolution rather than simply recreating what audiences saw in the early 2000s. Alongside Stewart, McKellen, and Marsden, the returning legacy roster includes Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, giving the film a genuinely deep bench of franchise veterans.

This is widely expected to be Marsden’s final outing as Cyclops, with Marvel Studios reportedly planning to recast the X-Men entirely for their eventual solo debut within the MCU following ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ That makes his return in ‘Doomsday’ feel like less of a soft reboot and more of a proper send-off for a character whose comic-accurate look has been decades in the making.

With Anthony and Joe Russo directing the film and a reported 165-minute runtime, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is positioning itself as the culmination of over a decade of world-building, both within the MCU and across the franchises Disney absorbed through its acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Whether the collision Marsden describes lives up to that scale remains to be seen when the film hits theaters.
