Kevin Feige Reveals Watching Robert Downey Jr. In ‘Oppenheimer’ Convinced Him He’d Found His Doctor Doom for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel Studios has spent months walking a careful line with ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ trying to prepare audiences for one of the boldest casting swings in the franchise’s history without giving away too much of what’s actually coming. Robert Downey Jr.’s transformation from the MCU’s most beloved hero into its next major villain remains the central mystery driving anticipation for the film.

Marvel president Kevin Feige has continued fielding questions about that decision as the film’s release date approaches, offering fans small glimpses into how the casting actually came together behind the scenes. His latest comments dig into exactly what makes Doctor Doom such a compelling character to bring to the screen in the first place.

Feige explained that the search for the right actor to play Doom led the studio back to Downey almost inevitably, describing the character as one of the most interesting figures in Marvel’s roster. “He’s intelligent, has an extremely high IQ, he can be a villain, but he also sees himself as a hero,” Feige said, adding that watching Downey’s Oscar-winning performance in ‘Oppenheimer’ helped the studio finally realize he was the right fit for the role.

That realization led Marvel to compare the decision to an earlier piece of casting history within the franchise. Feige noted that just as the studio didn’t want to exclude Chris Evans from playing Captain America simply because he’d already appeared as a different Marvel character, bringing back the franchise’s most famous hero to play its most famous villain felt like a similarly bold and worthwhile risk.

Feige also used the moment to explain just how personally significant the film feels to him, given that Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox finally made it possible to unite the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Doctor Doom on screen together for the first time. He described the result as a cosmic collision featuring beloved characters from each of those separate universes colliding in ways that were previously impossible.

That collision raises the stakes considerably compared to Marvel’s last major team-up event. Feige contrasted the film with ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ noting that while every hero united against a single common threat in that story, ‘Doomsday’ presents a far more precarious situation involving three separate universes and three separate versions of Earth literally crashing into one another.

According to Feige, that setup creates genuine dramatic tension around whether these heroes will end up fighting each other to protect their own individual worlds, or whether they’ll find a way to set aside those differences and work together to save everyone at once. That question appears central to how the film’s central conflict will ultimately play out once Doom’s plan is fully revealed.

Feige also addressed the film’s shifted release timeline, explaining that production simply couldn’t wrap in time for its originally planned May debut, which pushed the theatrical release to December instead. Given the scale of what Feige is describing, that extra time may prove essential to pulling off a crossover this ambitious.

With Downey’s performance as Doom still largely under wraps beyond marketing teasers and brief footage, Feige’s comments offer some of the clearest insight yet into how Marvel is approaching one of its most unconventional villain reveals to date. Whether Downey’s take on the character lives up to that buildup remains one of the biggest questions hanging over the film’s December release.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on December 18.
