‘Obsession’ Filmmaker Curry Barker Recorded a Secret Voice Message for Halloween Horror Nights Fans

‘Obsession‘ arrived as one of the year’s biggest horror surprises, turning a shoestring budget into a global box office phenomenon and launching first-time filmmaker Curry Barker into the spotlight. The psychological thriller, centered on a supernatural wish gone horribly wrong, has since become a streaming hit on Peacock and a talking point across the horror community.

That kind of cultural momentum rarely goes unnoticed by Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights team, and this year is no exception. Nikki, the film’s cursed central character played by Inde Navarrette, was added to the lineup of scare characters roaming the parks, giving fans a chance to encounter her in person during the event.

Now, creative director John Murdy has revealed an even deeper layer to the experience. Barker has recorded a secret voice message exclusively for Halloween Horror Nights attendees, tying directly into one of the film’s most unsettling running gags.

To access the hidden message, guests are being encouraged to track down Nikki within the park and offer her a specific password, which will be shared through Universal Studios’ social media accounts. Murdy explained that finding Nikki and giving her the right words could unlock something extra for guests willing to search her out.

That reward ties back to one of ‘Obsession’s’ most memorable details: the eerie customer service line for the fictional “One Wish Willow,” the cursed object at the center of the film’s plot. In the movie, Bear calls that number in a desperate attempt to undo his wish, only to be met by a detached, unsettling voice on the other end that was actually performed by Barker himself during editing.

Murdy leaned into that connection directly. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’ve asked him to record a special message for our fans as if he were the customer service rep from One Wish Willow,” adding that the recording will include a real phone number fans can call for an exclusive message from Barker.

Unlike some of Horror Nights’ other scare characters, Nikki won’t be handled by a rotating team of scare actors performing silently. Murdy noted that she’ll instead be portrayed by traditional actors delivering dialogue pulled directly from the film, giving guests a chance to hear lines lifted straight from ‘Obsession’ itself.

That attention to detail extends to safety as well, with a production assistant assigned to accompany Nikki as she moves through the park during the event. Halloween Horror Nights kicks off on August 28 at Universal Orlando, with the Hollywood location following on September 3.

Barker himself has embraced the crossover wholeheartedly. Speaking about seeing his character brought to life at the parks, Barker called the experience a “dream come true”, a sentiment that lines up with how quickly Universal’s creative team moved to add Nikki once Murdy saw the film for himself.

Given that ‘Obsession’ made its splash on a production budget of just $750,000, the film’s leap from streaming hit to full theme park integration says a lot about how far its cultural reach has grown in a short amount of time. It’s a rare turnaround for a horror property, going from a first-time filmmaker’s passion project to a fully realized Halloween Horror Nights presence within the same calendar year of its release.

For fans making the trip to Horror Nights this year, tracking down Nikki and her secret hotline message might just be the most rewarding scavenger hunt on the map.
