‘Furious’ Just Scored an Early Season 2 Renewal at Hulu, and the Numbers Explain Why
Hulu’s crime thriller landscape has been a mixed bag lately, with some freshman shows finding an audience while others quietly disappear after a single season. Just days ago, the streamer canceled its comedy ‘Not Suitable for Work,’ a reminder that even a full season order doesn’t guarantee a future on the platform.
Against that backdrop, ‘Furious‘ has spent the past month building real momentum. The crime drama, created by Elizabeth Meriwether of ‘New Girl’ and ‘The Dropout’ fame, premiered on July 27 and has reportedly been gaining viewers week over week ever since, a trend that’s rare enough on streaming to catch a network’s attention.
That momentum just paid off in a big way. Hulu has officially renewed ‘Furious’ for Season 2, and the announcement lands four days before the Season 1 finale even airs on August 31, an unusually early vote of confidence for a first-year series.
‘Furious’ stars Emmy Rossum as Alice Black, an FBI agent hunting a calculating female serial killer played by Lola Petticrew, whose performance in the show’s fifth episode earned her recognition as TVLine’s Performer of the Week. The official logline describes both characters as walking their own paths toward justice, with the line between right and wrong blurring as their lives intertwine.
The series has climbed into the Top 10 streaming originals list, and industry reporting suggests it’s been the number one show on Disney+ and Hulu worldwide for the month of August, while also ranking as the platform’s second-biggest freshman drama domestically this year. Its Rotten Tomatoes critics score currently sits at 98%, and one-day viewership for episode seven reportedly jumped 40% compared to the premiere.
Meriwether has been open about what drew her to the project in the first place. Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast, I’m Having an Episode, she said, “I love serial killer shows, but I’d never seen one with a female serial killer other than Killing Eve,” adding that she wanted to dive into that kind of character and found the 1987 film ‘Black Widow’ to be a useful framework for building the show.
‘Furious’ also features Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Alice’s FBI colleague Nora Washington and Scoot McNairy as NYPD homicide detective Danny Kelly, alongside recurring performances from Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang, and Steve Way. Meriwether executive produces through her Composition 8 banner alongside Rossum, Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead, and Sam Hoffman, with Brian Kirk serving as director and executive producer on the first two episodes.
Hulu has not yet released plot details, casting news, an episode count, or a production timeline for the show’s second season. Given how tightly Season 1 has been building its central cat-and-mouse dynamic, fans are likely to spend the coming months speculating about where Alice and her target go from here.
For now, ‘Furious’ fans can look forward to the Season 1 finale before turning their attention to whatever comes next in Season 2.
