‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Sank ‘Titanic’ to Become the 4th Highest-Grossing Movie Ever

Box office records have a way of standing untouched for decades, only to fall suddenly once the right film comes along at the right moment. James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ has occupied a spot among cinema’s biggest earners for nearly three decades, buoyed by multiple theatrical re-releases that kept its total climbing long after its original 1997 run ended.

That kind of staying power made ‘Titanic’ feel like a fixture on the all-time chart, even as newer blockbusters chased it year after year. Tom Holland’s latest outing as Spider-Man has spent the past month doing exactly that, riding a string of dominant weekends both domestically and internationally.

Now, that chase has officially ended. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has outgrossed the entire theatrical run of ‘Titanic,’ officially becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Holland alongside Zendaya, ‘Brand New Day’ pulled in another $39 million domestically and $109 million globally during its fourth weekend in theaters, once again topping both the domestic and international charts. That performance pushed its worldwide total past the $2.2 billion mark, enough to finally slide past Titanic’s spot on the all-time list.

The film’s climb up the charts has been relentless since its release. It’s already become Sony’s biggest release ever, surpassing the $1.9 billion haul of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ and it recently overtook ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to become the second-highest-grossing film ever at the North American box office alone.

With Titanic now in its rearview mirror, ‘Brand New Day’ has set its sights on the 2025 Chinese animated hit ‘Ne Zha 2,’ which currently sits in fourth place with roughly $2.27 billion worldwide. The gap between the two films has narrowed to around $50 million, making it likely that Holland’s Spider-Man could climb even higher on the all-time list within the coming weeks.

Beyond that, the film still trails Avatar: The Way of Water in third place, along with Avengers: Endgame in second and James Cameron’s Avatar, which remains the reigning box office champion with roughly $2.9 billion including re-releases. Complicating the picture further, Endgame itself is set for a theatrical re-release on September 25, a move that could widen its own gap with Avatar once again.

Elsewhere on the current box office charts, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has continued putting up strong numbers of its own, sitting at the number two global spot with a worldwide total of $1.44 billion, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date. A new challenger in the form of Ridley Scott’s ‘The Dog Stars’ is set to enter theaters the following weekend, adding another contender to an already crowded box office landscape.

For now, though, the spotlight belongs to ‘Brand New Day.’ Projections suggest the film could finish its run with a worldwide total near $2.45 billion, a number that would put it within reach of even more milestones before its theatrical run winds down. Given how consistently it’s outperformed expectations so far, few would bet against Holland’s Spider-Man climbing even higher before all is said and done.
