‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Only Predicted for One Oscar Nomination

Marvel’s relationship with the Academy Awards has always been a complicated one. Despite years of blockbuster success and critical goodwill for individual performances, the MCU’s presence at the Oscars has mostly been limited to the technical categories, with acting and directing nominations remaining rare across the franchise’s nearly two-decade run.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ arrived this summer as one of the year’s biggest theatrical events, marking Tom Holland’s fourth standalone outing as Peter Parker and the 38th feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe overall. The film has been praised for its emotionally grounded approach to the character, reportedly bringing Peter back down to earth, both literally and figuratively, as his powers undergo a surprising transformation.

Despite that acclaim, early predictions suggest the film’s awards season prospects remain modest. According to Variety’s 2027 Oscar predictions list, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is projected to receive just a single nomination, landing in the Best Visual Effects category alongside heavyweight contenders like ‘Dune: Part Three,’ ‘Godzilla Minus Zero,’ ‘The Odyssey,’ and ‘Project Hail Mary.’

That modest outlook actually fits a long-running trend for the web-slinger at the Academy Awards. Sam Raimi’s original 2002 film earned nominations in Sound and Visual Effects, while its 2004 sequel actually won Visual Effects and picked up additional bids for Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. After that peak, the franchise went through a lengthy drought, with ‘Spider-Man 3,’ both ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films, and Holland’s own ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Far From Home’ failing to land a single nomination.

That changed with ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in 2021, which broke through with a Visual Effects nomination before ultimately losing to ‘Dune.’ ‘Brand New Day’ now finds itself chasing that same lone nomination, competing in a especially crowded field this cycle that also includes fellow MCU release ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

Much of the buzz around the film’s technical work centers on its blend of large-scale spectacle and practical execution. Analysts have pointed to the film’s use of practical stunt work layered with digital enhancement as a key factor in its favor, especially with elements involving the Hulk, aerial combat sequences, and Sadie Sink’s mysterious character contributing to the film’s visual variety.

Still, competition in the category remains fierce, and the Visual Effects branch has a history of passing over blockbuster contenders that don’t fully meet its standards. Whether ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can both crack the final five nominees remains one of the more interesting subplots of this year’s predictions, given how rarely two films from the same franchise compete in the same category during the same cycle.

Beyond the technical race, the film’s production design has also drawn some attention, with Marvel veteran Charles Wood credited for its comic-accurate, brightly colored recreation of New York City’s street-level world. That detail could give the film a small outside shot at expanding beyond the visual effects and sound categories, though nothing beyond Visual Effects currently appears to be a serious contender according to early forecasts.

For a franchise that has historically struggled to make noise during awards season, even a single nomination would keep ‘Brand New Day’ in line with its predecessors’ track record. It’s also a reminder that box office success and awards recognition rarely move in lockstep, especially for a genre that the Academy has traditionally kept at arm’s length outside of the technical categories.

That said, predictions this early in the season are far from set in stone, and campaigns, guild wins, and shifting industry buzz can reshape a film’s odds significantly between now and nomination morning. If ‘Brand New Day’ manages to build momentum in other technical races, particularly sound or production design, its final tally could end up looking different from where things stand today.
