‘Lanterns’ Just Became the Most-Watched Show on the Planet, and Nobody Saw It Coming

DC Studios has had a mixed track record when it comes to translating its television projects into genuine word-of-mouth phenomena, but something different is happening right now. What started as a cautiously received detective drama has quickly turned into one of the most talked-about shows of the year.

The series in question is ‘Lanterns,’ the gritty HBO original following Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a murder that pulls them into something far bigger than either expected. Early buzz around the show was tempered by skepticism, with some fans worried the grounded, procedural tone would sideline the cosmic superhero elements longtime Green Lantern readers actually wanted.

Those concerns have essentially evaporated. ‘Lanterns’ has now claimed the number one spot on Rotten Tomatoes’ most popular chart, the top spot on HBO Max, and the number one position overall on IMDb, an extraordinarily rare trifecta for any series, let alone one still airing its freshman season.

The critical reception alone has been striking. ‘Lanterns’ has climbed to a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, officially making it the highest-rated project in the entire DC Universe, surpassing ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 at 94 percent, ‘Creature Commandos’ at 93 percent, and ‘Superman’ at 83 percent.

That score didn’t arrive overnight, either. The series initially debuted at 89 percent when its review embargo lifted, climbed to 91 percent ahead of premiere, and kept rising as more critics weighed in, with reviewers repeatedly drawing comparisons to prestige dramas like ‘True Detective.’

The show’s dominance hasn’t been limited to domestic audiences, either. ‘Lanterns’ has climbed to number one on HBO Max not just in the United States but globally, having held the top spot across markets including Germany, France, Australia, and the Philippines, among many others.

On IMDb specifically, ‘Lanterns’ has held the number one position on the platform’s most popular TV shows chart with an 8.0 rating, edging out established hits like ‘Reacher’ and ‘Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War’ for the top slot. That’s a notable feat for a brand-new series going up against shows with years of existing fanbases behind them.

Much of the credit is going to the show’s cast and creative team. Kyle Chandler stars as Hal Jordan opposite Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, with Nathan Fillion also returning as Guy Gardner, a role he’s now played across three separate DC Studios projects. Showrunner Chris Mundy developed the series alongside Tom King and Damon Lindelof, blending detective-noir storytelling with the franchise’s signature cosmic mythology.

For a franchise still working to prove its new direction under James Gunn and Peter Safran can consistently deliver, ‘Lanterns’ landing this kind of across-the-board dominance is a significant win. It arrives at a moment when the DCU badly needed a project that could unite critical acclaim with genuine mainstream viewership, rather than one or the other.

It’s also worth noting that critics have reportedly only screened a handful of the show’s eight total episodes so far, meaning both its Rotten Tomatoes score and its broader popularity numbers could still shift as the remaining chapters roll out weekly. Still, reaching the top of three separate major platforms simultaneously is the kind of achievement most shows never manage even at their peak, let alone during an ongoing season.

Whether ‘Lanterns’ can sustain this momentum through its finale remains the next big question for DC Studios to answer. For now, though, the series has quietly become the biggest television story of the summer.
