Hollywood loves an underdog story, but few have played out quite like this one. What began as a shelved animated comedy destined for a tax write-off has turned into one of the most unlikely comeback stories the industry has seen in years.

‘Coyote vs. Acme,’ the hybrid live-action and animated Looney Tunes film, spent years trapped in limbo after Warner Bros. abruptly canceled its release. For a while, it looked like audiences would never get to see the finished movie at all.

That changed thanks in large part to one especially dedicated fan, and now the cast is making sure he knows it. At the film’s premiere, stars John Cena, Lana Condor, Will Forte, and others delivered heartfelt thank-yous directed at the protester who famously dressed as Wile E. Coyote and campaigned relentlessly for the shelved film’s release.

The fan in question became something of a folk hero within the film community after he picketed outside the Warner Bros. lot in the rain, in full Wile E. Coyote costume, following the movie’s cancellation. His protest went viral and helped fuel a broader wave of public pressure calling for the film to see the light of day.

That spirit carried directly into the film’s world premiere at the Directors Village theater in Westwood. A costumed Wile E. Coyote character marched down the red carpet alongside the UCLA marching band, carrying a sign reading “Absolute Cinema,” a direct nod to the viral protest footage that helped keep the movie’s fate in the public conversation.

The same character reportedly appeared inside the screening itself, holding another sign that simply read, “Thank you fans.” It was a fitting touch for a film whose entire journey to theaters has been defined by audience persistence rather than studio confidence.

Director Dave Green captured that disbelief in the moment, admitting he still couldn’t quite process finally reaching the premiere after years of uncertainty. He told TheWrap that he still couldn’t believe they’d actually arrived at this moment.

Forte echoed that sentiment, expressing how eager he was for audiences to finally experience the film after years of delay. Speaking to TheWrap, he shared that he couldn’t wait for people to see it and how proud and excited he was about the project.

Ketchup Entertainment ultimately stepped in to acquire the film after its cancellation, a moment that sparked immediate celebration across the cast and crew. Voice actor Eric Bauza, who plays Wile E. Coyote, began hashtagging posts celebrating the news within hours of the announcement, while co-star P.J. Byrne posted his own excitement online, crediting the fandom’s persistence for making the rescue possible.

The film officially reached theaters this week, distributed by Ketchup Entertainment following its wide theatrical rollout. Green marked the occasion with a public thank-you letter, framing the release as proof that dedicated audiences can genuinely change a film’s fate when a studio’s initial decision doesn’t hold up under public scrutiny.

For a movie literally about an underdog taking on a powerful corporation, having its real-world release story mirror that exact narrative feels almost too fitting to be coincidental. The fan who once stood alone in the rain outside a studio lot is now, in a very real sense, part of the reason ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ exists in theaters at all.
