Marvel’s roster of returning Avengers keeps expanding with every passing week, and fans have grown accustomed to parsing every cryptic social media post for hints about who might show up next. Few original team members carry quite the same nostalgic weight as the franchise’s resident archer.

Jeremy Renner’s status within the MCU has remained something of an open question in recent years, especially after he wasn’t included among the confirmed cast for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ That absence hasn’t stopped speculation from swirling, though, and the latest wave of buzz suggests his story with the franchise may not be finished yet.

According to a new report, Renner is reportedly set to return as Hawkeye in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ the follow-up film to ‘Doomsday’ currently slated for a December 2027 release. The claim adds fuel to a growing pile of hints the actor himself has been dropping in recent days.

Renner recently shared a close-up photo of his Hawkeye costume to his Instagram story, offering no caption to clarify its meaning, a move that instantly sent fans into speculation mode. He followed that up with another Instagram story showing a similar shot of the costume, this time captioned “Added to END GAME PRESS,” further stoking rumors about a potential return tied to Marvel’s current promotional cycle.

Renner’s relationship with these Avengers sequels has been anything but straightforward. Back in October 2025, the actor addressed the possibility of appearing in either ‘Doomsday’ or ‘Secret Wars,’ laughing off the idea that Marvel might replace him with a Hawkeye variant and noting simply that he stays busy with other projects.

Kevin Feige added another layer to the story shortly after, confirming during CinemaCon that additional ‘Doomsday’ casting news was still to come, even as Renner continued downplaying his involvement. Whether that denial reflected genuine uncertainty or the kind of contractual secrecy Marvel actors are frequently bound to remains unclear.

Complicating things further, Renner has also been confirmed to reprise Clint Barton for Avengers Infinity Defense, a new attraction joining Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. Announced during the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23, the ride is set to open in 2028 and will also feature Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, and Robert Downey Jr., placing Renner back in the Marvel fold in at least one confirmed capacity.

Renner has been open about his hopes for the character’s future beyond just these films. He previously told Empire that he felt his body was getting ready for a potential return, expressing enthusiasm about revisiting the world of Hawkeye and hinting at a possible second season of his Disney+ series.

Given how deeply Clint Barton’s story remains tied to characters like Kate Bishop and Yelena Belova, many fans view an eventual reappearance as inevitable rather than optional. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is already confirmed to feature a massive roster of returning stars, including Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, and Tom Hiddleston, with ‘Secret Wars’ expected to expand that lineup even further once its own cast list is revealed.

Whether Renner’s latest teases translate into an official confirmation remains to be seen, but the timing certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans piecing together clues ahead of Marvel’s next wave of announcements. For now, all eyes remain on whether Hawkeye’s bow makes its way back into the fold when ‘Secret Wars’ finally arrives.
