Pedro Pascal Suits Up for a New Chapter in Tony Gilroy’s Awards-Season Contender ‘Behemoth!’ – Check out the New Look

Awards season has a way of quietly building momentum long before the trophies start getting handed out, and this year’s field is already generating serious buzz around one particular passion project. When a filmmaker known for meticulous, character-driven storytelling steps back into the director’s chair after over a decade away, industry watchers tend to take notice.

That anticipation has only grown around Tony Gilroy’s ‘Behemoth!‘, the acclaimed writer-director’s first feature film since 2012’s ‘The Bourne Legacy.’ Gilroy spent much of the years in between crafting the celebrated Star Wars series ‘Andor,’ making this return to original feature filmmaking feel especially significant within Hollywood circles.

That excitement just received a fresh boost with the release of a new image showing Pedro Pascal in character ahead of the film’s December 4 theatrical release. The photo offers another glimpse into the world Gilroy has built around Pascal’s central performance as the film heads toward its prime awards-season debut.

Pascal stars as Alex Serian, a gifted cellist who returns home to Los Angeles after roughly twenty years on the road, in a role that marks his first true solo lead in a feature film. According to the film’s official synopsis, music has remained the constant, all-consuming force throughout Alex’s life, one that eventually carries him toward an adventure that changes him forever.

Notably, Pascal reportedly stepped into the role after Oscar Isaac exited the project, taking on a part that required him to perform much of his own cello work on screen. That commitment to authenticity has become one of the film’s more talked-about details, with early trailer footage showing Pascal deep in concentration among a room of fellow string players.

The ensemble surrounding him reads like a genuine embarrassment of riches. Eva Victor plays Nadia, a fellow cellist and Alex’s love interest, while Olivia Wilde appears as an ex from the life he left behind, and Will Arnett takes on the role of his brother. Arnett reportedly had to reshoot scenes originally filmed with David Harbour, who departed the project citing his own mental health.

Hank Azaria, Matthew Lillard, JoBeth Williams, and Margarita Levieva round out the supporting cast, giving Gilroy an ensemble capable of carrying the film’s reportedly talky, character-driven structure. The story is said to continually cut between the orchestra and Alex’s real life, using the film’s score as an active narrative layer rather than simple background accompaniment.

‘Behemoth!’ has already earned significant recognition ahead of its theatrical release, having been selected as the Centerpiece selection for the 64th New York Film Festival. That designation carries real weight within the industry, often reserved for films believed to be entering peak awards-season conversation at precisely the right moment.

Searchlight Pictures, the studio behind past awards-season successes like ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Nomadland,’ has positioned ‘Behemoth!’ squarely within its traditional December release strategy, a window designed to stay fresh in voters’ minds while still allowing time to build word of mouth ahead of the holidays. Given Gilroy’s pedigree and the strength of this ensemble, expectations for the film’s awards prospects appear to be running high.

With a script penned by Gilroy himself and direction marking his return to the kind of personal filmmaking that defined 2007’s ‘Michael Clayton,’ ‘Behemoth!’ feels positioned as one of the season’s more distinctive offerings. Fans eager to see Pascal step outside his usual franchise work won’t have to wait much longer, with the film arriving in theaters this December.
