‘Law & Order: SVU’ Season 28 Episode 3 Recap and Ending Explained: Why Benson Benches Bruno After a Dark Web Case Pushes Him to the Edge
Every long-running procedural eventually has to ask what the job costs the people who do it. ‘Law & Order: SVU‘ has circled that question for years, but a new case turns it into something far more personal. It also arrives a few weeks after the season opener, which showed Captain Olivia Benson pushing against the system she serves.
This week’s installment, ‘Anonymity,’ follows a harrowing investigation into a dark web site and a turf war with federal agents. Along the way, it puts Detective Terry Bruno through his most punishing stretch yet.
The ‘SVU’ ending explained comes down to a single decision: once the case is wrapped, Benson orders Bruno to take leave, and he agrees. Their conversation exposes how much he has absorbed, and how much Benson may be carrying herself.
The episode opens with Bruno arguing with Rollins, and the case quickly grows darker. A child abuse investigation leads the squad to a dark web site known as The Gate. Before it, the squad had closed out an abduction case involving a young boy that ended on a tragic note.
Benson had said the team would split up the evidence the next day. Bruno ignored that plan and stayed overnight to go through the material himself, looking for identifying markers that could lead to the victims. By choosing to absorb the worst of it, he shielded his colleagues but isolated himself.
Things get messier when the FBI turns out to be onto the site already and has infiltrated it. Agents are letting it keep running in hopes of catching the people trafficking children, which means the abuse continues in the meantime. Benson suggests identifying the victims first, and a special task force clashes with SVU over how to proceed.
At one point Benson asks the agents to leave, and an agent named Fei tries to manipulate her. The task force later interrupts and takes over, and Bruno tries to stop them but fails. Even so, the squad pushes on, and Benson and Bruno interrogate a suspect named Sam. Bruno also arrests a man named Lloyd, and the team ultimately makes several arrests, including tracking down a gatekeeper of the site.
Fin returns to the squad just in time to support Bruno. Bruno is visibly triggered by his own past trauma, and at first Fin insists he isn’t getting involved. He eventually opens up and explains that the job used to be all he thought about, and that there is a difference between doing the job and letting it become you.
It’s a meaningful moment for a character who has kept his own darkness in check for years. It also lands because Fin is the one who talked Bruno into leaving the Bronx and joining the Manhattan squad.

With the case closed, Benson tells Bruno she’s making him take leave. Bruno pushes back by calling her out for pretending nothing gets to her, noting she didn’t take time off herself after risking her career and her detectives’ careers by defying the FBI. She says the leave is about protection, because she doesn’t want her detectives going above and beyond at their own expense.
Benson’s real problem isn’t that Bruno watched the evidence on his own, but that he pretended it hadn’t affected him. The conversation reads as concern flowing in both directions. Bruno eventually agrees to go, though it remains unclear whether he fully understands why he needs the time.

Cops-versus-feds fights are a staple of crime dramas, but this one finds a sharper angle. One review notes the FBI was effectively allowing abuse to continue while it built a larger case against a trafficking ring. A compromise that would let SVU protect children in the meantime might have been possible, yet nobody was willing to discuss it.
The episode ultimately asks who law enforcement should prioritize first when victims are involved. As one critic put it, there are no easy answers.
Bruno’s leave could shake up the squad’s dynamic in the weeks ahead. NBC airs new episodes on Thursdays at 9 p.m., and the next installment, ‘Arcana,’ arrives October 29. A few days later on November 5, NBA star Jalen Brunson makes a guest appearance in an episode.
Was Benson right to order Bruno to take leave after the dark web case?
